    Mermaids

Like most things I draw, there's a lack of finish to this one and I don't know what to do to help that.

If you want to show a mermaid, I think one of the crucial symbols you need to show is the tail. Otherwise they just kind of look like spectres/ghosts.

Hah, I had the tail flipping back up on the bottom of the image but thought it broke the composition. I guess I'll have to add them back.

Imo it would be better to give them more breathing room, especially top and bottom (add the tail too like octopuscats said). Maybe change their dresses so they dont mirror each other (a few different details would do, avoid perfect simmetry if it's not intended), and different expressions would be cool too, like sad and happy, wich could influence the dress design.
Since you mirrored them the lighting is kinda strange, decide on the direction of the light. Play and push more the warms and cools.
Also a soft light would help the subject.

This can become a really strong painting, i dig it, keep working

Just updating before I go to bed.

So, mostly the fact that the mermaid is mirrored is because instagram won't let me upload an image and I had to convert it to being a square. This was the most efficient way I could think of doing so without ruining the feel of the image. So think of the lighting being because the other merm is a reflection rather than being a separate entity.

That being said, I do want them to look different to create some visual interest. I went along with your statement and changed the one on the right's dress and face. I think it's better but I think I really borked her face up, the smile isn't great. I still have a while to go to fix the lighting and stuff. But I don't really have a good understanding of how that all works.

I've tried upping the contrast as I think it's quite lacking in that regard, but I think that doing so ruins the atmosphere or the feel or whatever.

Thanks guys! Will try addressing every point.

Instagram cropping is a bitch, but your ratio doesn’t have to be 1:1. They change it with every update (another headache) but I think they also take 5:7. I would look it up just to be safe. There’s also the option of running it through photoshop and adding letterboxing to make it fit

octopuscats - Nah I just gave it a try, I can't really fit a long image on it. I could letterbox it, but I've already done that with a few things. I think the composition I have now is - fine. That being said allow me to vent on how much of a chore instagram is to work with. It is unfortunately a decent platform for uploading and viewing art, it just has too many restrictions for not only being photo based but also being incredibly phone centric.

Anyway, little update, upped the red.

And after all that just removed the halo outline things they have, it looks better now I think. I don't know.

The mermaid is an oceanic animal with the head and abdominal area of a female human and the tail of a fish. Mermaids show up in the old stories of numerous societies around the world.

Are you a robot trying to assimilate to human culture?

quick paint over pushed color temperatures and edges around focal points as I think shape in middle takes too much attention, its up to you how much you push it

this is awesome, I love the texture of the pastel colors you've got here.
my only qualm is that the mermaid legs don't curve very nicely. Maybe more exciting twist to them?
