Am I doing this exercise right? (Albrecht Durer)

I started trying to go through this book by Albrecht Durer called "Of the just shaping of letters". I find it hard to read, considering I'm not good at reading 16th century English. I was using a ruler and an elipse guide to do these four A's. Is the idea to free hand some of it? The exercise is supposed to improve draftsmanship and proportions, so im not sure im going about it the right way.

I suggest you use recent sources for improving draftsmanship and proportions.
