    Dare to Believe - a sketchbook! :D

    Edit: Newer stuff at bottom!!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    G'day. My name is Pedro Jorge Magalhaes but most people just call me PJ (a lot shorter don't you reckon?*S*). I am trying really hard to improve my drawing skills so that i can eventually tell stories in a graphic format (i am also taking baby steps to tell stories in a more verbal format). I have a pretty bad work ethic but i am also trying hard to improve that.
    And this is where this thread comes in. I hopped in here to check out Rodrigo's and JDINX's threads and i have gotten hooked. There is an amazing amount of energy at this place. If that can rub off on me so that i draw a little more regularly than the only thing better than that, in my book, is improvement. And since i believe one will lead into another, let's not delay this any longer.
    As it will be readily evident at the beginning i am not on par with the quality of this place but that means i have something to shoot for, right?
    Just, huh, quick question: do i have to have the pics up on the web somewhere so that i can link them here? is that how it works?
    Eager to start,
    hey welcome PJ, yeh i just started my sketchbook too. but anyway yeh you need to find some kind of website that will host your pictures first of all, i use www.deviantart.com as its free and easy but there is a lot more which everyone else uses, once you've got your pictures up on the web the best thing to do then is to right click on your image on the website than copy the url and paste it inbetween these image tags:
    [ img] here is where you paste the url [ /img]
    but remember there are no spaces in the tags when you do them, have a go and ill keep checking on you, ask anymore questions if your unsure,
    good luck
    just try
    http://www.photobucket.com
    which will allow you to host images and stuff
    thanks guys!
    I have come across my first bump on the road. For some reason my wireless adapter and scanner just dont like each other. I have spent all morning trying to figure out why i could not scan things in to show you guys and it has taken a lot of energy out of my morning. *huffs*.
    But it's all cool. I should have more energy after soccer. So i'll post what i did a couple of weeks ago and then start doing new ones today. *S*
    And i will also go to that bucket website to see if i can start putiing things in there.*S*
    Unhappy sorry guys...
    ... i really like the way other people do their stuff but it is just going to take a while for me to find the place to put my images. I went to photbucket Rodrigo but presently you can only sign up for a free account between certain times of the day and i have yet to be online at those times.
    so this will have to do for now.
    Let's get this show on the road shall we? *L*
    These are all just loomis studies...
    And the next 2 are loomis applied studies, i.e., i found some photos or drawings and turned them into loomis manequins.
    jam entry!
    This is my Jam entry Kondor. I know it neither very good nor finished. But i have a big problem with taking to long to do drawings and for such a fun jam i felt myself falling into the same patterns. so i sped it up and scanned what i had at the end of today.*S* Eager to see yours.
    A couple of sketches of goalkeepers for the jam.
    and some more face studies.*S*
    sorry for the delay
    haven't posted in a few days but i am trying hard to stick to a schedule and it seems to be paying off. Hopefully i will be able to increase the output soon.
    Here's what's come of the last few days.
    Boots are something i have figured out i have a lot of trouble with so i did a few copies of drawings before i actually try to draw an actual boot myself.*L* The tree is something else i had a lot of trouble not too long but it has become a pleasant surprise because i am actually loving looking at trees and seeing them in my head. I will draw more of them soon. The one at the bottom, where it's just branches, has actually been inked. It has not been cleaned but it is inked. I used brush, tissue paper (yep!) and charcoal pencil. *S*
    With this next one i am starting my new practice sketches and my studies of textures for my next Kubet assignment. So both are water in different ways, a rainy day and a fishbowl (which i will attempt to ink tomorrow)
    Speaking of which, the inking is why i have not more drawings to show. As soon as i can i will show you the last inking job i did this week.*S*
    Some things
    Hey guys. Been keeping an eye on some of your sketchbooks and as always great work. I have not posted anything because i try to limit my time on the web. However enough is enough and i need to post some stuff. *LOL*
    this is me trying to make myself get out of the house to do some sketching and life study, even if in this case is at my work, the pool at Ryde.
    I am really trying to work at getting better at inking for comic books and it has been bugging me for a while that i cannot really draw in ink where ever i am, at least not with a brush. So i finally went out and bought myself a couple of brush pens. This is a drawing i did directly with the brush from a comp game my g/f Lisa was playing yesterday.*S*
    I've started to do my second assignment for my inking course and this is my prelim for the mansion in the assig.
    Also for the course i have to do a frog and these are some sketches. I will do more. The last one was the first thing i did with the brush pen when i got home. It is a tracing of one of the previous drawings. *cough* I am sorry, did i say tracing? oh my gosh no no no i mean inking. *LOL*
    an inked page!
    Pencils by David Yardin, inks by PJ (that would be me).
    Sorry about taking the pages doen but i think the link offers better res at geocities than at photobucket (unless of course i don't know what i am doing).
    http://www.geocities.com/comixnut/recent_inks.htm
    let's see if that works for real.
    Last edited by comixnut; August 28th, 2005 at 07:05 AM. Reason: putting them in order with better res hopefully!
    hey thanks ppl!
    Thank you for having a look but most of all, for your words. You know i have noticed that this board is extremely good at giving crits and helpful advise AND keeping it positive with really good vibes. I have yet to see something nasty and i hope it remains that way.
    Anyway i was mentioning that because i have been having some problems visualizing and constructing some drawings and maybe i could get some help here. I really need to get me one of those support groups you guys got going!*S*
    Odds - i don't know if i made it clear (sorry i am used to just talking to comic book people who already know what i do)... those pencils are not mine (HA i wish!), they are from a guy called David Yardin. I only tried to lay some inks over his stuff. By the way i really was running out of time when i replied in your thread but i really liked it. I haven't seen nearly all of it but i have subscribed now so i can keep up with it! *S*
    Goog - *LOL* if you thought that was weird you should check the link out and see the 'licking scene'. Don't say i didn't warn you though! *L*
    stuff for inking porfolio
    These are just little depictions of me that i did for the pages separating the different sections.
    The first is to welcome the onlooker:
    the second was to let you into the inks bit;
    the third was for those inks that were not finished;
    Again i hope you like!
    Hey a question for you. What tools do you use with your ink jobs? My problem with inking is that the line always look flat and not really "organic".
    The answer is...
    ... i use whatever works, that's what i have always been told. But in my case, i started off with markers, then moved on to nibs and these days i use brush most of the time. I have a really good Raphael one that came with my Kubert course, then the "industry standard" Windsor & Newton series 7 #1, #2 and #3 but i really love my chinese water brush called "the outstanding drawing brush" from willsquills.com.
    Hope that helps. Hey did you hear? The socceroos just made it into the World Cup! Bloody Champions!! *L*
