    Help with anatomy and lighting?

    Hey, newbie artist here. I've been working on this piece for a while but something seems off. I think the culprits are lighting and probably the anatomy, but I'm clueless what parts of them I need to fix. Can someone point it out to me or maybe do some red lines? Any other criticisms welcome.

    EDIT: Sorry, was having trouble uploading the pic. >>;

    What's up with the dark orange middle portion of the tail? I am unclear where the light is coming from? Top left to bottom right? Side left to side right?

    Any particular reason the ocean floor lacks shadows?

    The neck seems awfully thick.

    There are a number of anatomy issues which I'm not sure are stylistically intentional or not, but the most obvious one I see if her belly button, which is should be centered (try drawing a centerline down her entire body for guidance).

    As for the shadows, the placement isn't overly accurate, but neither is the texture. Light diffuses in water differently than in air, giving softer shadows and more refracting light. I don't know if realism is what you're going for, but maybe Google underwater photos and see how the shadows look.

    Good luck friend!

    I'll be linking to various DA pages Please read their rules before using any reference too much.
    This one gives a great idea of what Dread_Reaper's talking about.

    See how the belly button barely visible. The butt is strongly viewable due to body angle. The breasts shouldn't be perfect circles in water. This one is well endowed example of breasts in water.

    Morguefile.com is a great resource, pay close attention to the lighting. Most have strong light spots. The flatter looking ground areas in photos have strong atmospheric/water interference.

    Also your combination of gradients and cell shading isn't working out well. Cell shading doesn't represent your proposed lighting. Here is a quick brushover

    Thank you so much for the reference and the links! I'm going to try to implement everyone's suggestions and see if I can turn the piece around.
