    Need help with value comp

Hey guys, as the title says. This is still a very early WIP so forgive the messiness, just wanted a more experienced set of eyes on it before moving forward. Environments are my weakest point so I could use some help with the scenery too. It's supposed to be a deer resting by a pond surrounded by willow trees in a forest grove.. but something about it isn't exactly working out and I can't figure out what

Convert it to black and white and see what's up.

Major areas - the bank is just a dark mess.
The dark area where the back leg sits over the other leg.

    The far front knee.

It may help to figure out a time of day/light direction to better throw accents on surfaces.
My commentary is a gift to you.

I agree with Modi123's comments, and was a little surprised by yours?

"I have to admit I'm completely lost on how to draw banks"

Surely you are using reference for this? You cant expect to hold all the texture information and deer anatomy in your head mate!
Get on google and print out a willow tree that you like, a Deer pose that you like and a nice riverbank or even a few.
build it up from that in your plan and it will go much easier it will also help with the lighting problem.

    I hope this helps.

I also agree wholeheartedly with Modi's comments, I apologize if my reply gave the opposite impression.

I am using multiple references for the majority of this but what I could find on riverbanks in particular fell short, thank you both for taking the time to help out, I'll be sure to study those videos asap.
