EOW #311: Natural Fortifications of Takahashi Castle - VOTING

EOW #311: Natural Fortifications of Takahashi Castle

Japanese castles were fortresses constructed primarily of wood and stone. They evolved from the wooden stockades of earlier centuries, and came into their best-known form in the 16th century. Castles in Japan were built to guard important or strategic sites, such as ports, river crossings, or crossroads, and almost always incorporated the landscape into their defenses.

Takahashi Castle is one such castle with natural fortifications. Is it built atop a hill or mound? Are there jagged rock-walls and artificial mounds, or natural rivers surrounding the castle?

    Requirements:
-Design an environment showing Takahashi Castle along with its natural fortifications.
-Showing actual samurai in your image is optional.
-A backstory is not required but desired. What type of story is your image telling? What types of battles have happened here, and what is the castle guarding itself against exactly?

    Deadline for entries: February 24
    , 2018.

    Good luck, Wacom tablet sword-wielders!

Okay here's my first set of thumbnails. I think I'm going to explore number 8 or just go in a completely different direction.

Am I correct in thinking that this is the topic this week? I'm a bit confused but when I googled a Takahashi Castle this came up, are we suppose to draw the environment around it or draw an actual castle

I like one and two the best, I tried to create a spikes in the ocean in number three but it didn't work, so ignore it. Number 4 is suppose to focus mainly on the actual castle rather then its terrain. Opinions would be appreciated

    Anton, great thumbnails.

CharliesComics, I also like #1 the best. The real-life Takahashi castle you googled and posted, I didn't know it existed until now, lol. It's a coincidence with the name, but that picture is actually a good example of the topic. Thanks for bringing this up.

Street view and 360 vacation photos have become one of my favorite online resources for inspiration.
Experimenting with a variety of locations, they all involve water to some capacity.

W.I.P, have lots of time this week so might post updates a lot. I've been playing around with tools (the watercolour and blur) and I wish I had used them earlier as they make my work look better (at least I think XD)

Is this EOW 310 or EOW 311?

@Anton - I like your choice, but I also like five. I like the idea of having a gigantic tree, though it might eclipse the castle.
@Charlie - I noticed you went with one. I think all your thumbnails would have worked out fine.
    @InfernoKing - 7 looks promising to me.

Anton: I like 8 but I also think 5 and 3 would work well too
    InfernoKing: I like 7 and 8
edgarej: I like how the samurai is looking up at the castle in 3

    So a lot of my friends picked three on the last one, and I developed it a little, but I also made two new thumbnails based on some of infernoking's ideas (sorry for stealing!) and I'm now beginning to like these two new ones more (especially the new 3). Let me know what you guys think;

edgarej: I still personally prefer 1 however I think 3 would work really well as well. Overall it's u to you and if you prefer 3 then go for it. I think you should consider which one you could take the furthest when deciding

@charlie... I like 1 too, but it reminds me too much of my entry last year for the iconic fortress... which reminds me, who won that round again? Was it Alembic?

I changed the design but suddenly its not freezing cold outside so I've actually been able to go places, so i'm not as far as I thought I would be . I'm hoping i'll get it finished in time but as you can see i'm still in the very early stages

Trying out a different light source, and adjusted the architecture a bit.

@mailman--- nice color scheme. there's quite a few issues with perspective, etc, but I would have to say that your biggest problem would be the fact that it's not clear what geographic fortification is present. It looks like the castle is in the middle of the field, which is quite easy to invade.
@charlie - I honestly prefer the sea scene, although your hole in the ground idea would be cool if it surrounds the cliff the castle is on... as in a moat surrounding a hill/cliff with a castle on it.
@corrick - at this early stage, you already got my vote

@edgarej no problem, I live to inspire
I like the waterfall island defense you're going with, adds intrigue as to how an enemy would go about attacking that.
As for values, maybe a touch of atmospheric perspective on the forest hills in the upper-left to distinguish them from the midground hills?
@mailman129: try zooming out of the composition a bit, the fortress is taking up so much of the image focus we can't see the surrounding landscape or how that landscape influenced the construction.

@edgarej I also prefer the water scene however I don't have the skills yet to create the scene I have in my head. Maybe in the future I can finally put that idea on paper. I like the direction yours is heading in and I'm looking forwards to seeing it complete

@InfernoKing I can never find anything to critique about your work, it's always so good!

@Mailman129 I like the idea and you have defiantly improved since last week, I think there needs to be more defense for the castle, I like the idea of it being in a field but maybe a canyon or a wall or something to stop intruders

Infernoking: Awesome thumbnails! I like how detailed and well planned these are. I personally like the 3 b&w thumbnails the best, they have a nice flow to them.
Charlie: I personally like the sketch with water more too, you could do a dynamic piece by playing around with waves. Your sketches are very clean but I'd like to see more busyness and more stuff to look at.
Mailman: Good effort! Don't forget your perspective, remember that all line converge to a point on the horizon line. Right now the roof on the side is out of perspective. Also don't forget to follow the design brief, at the moment the castle is not very well defended by a natural element.
Edgarej: Your piece is coming along very nicely! I like both the idea and the execution, the colours are awesome!
    Corrick : Mind blowing.

I'm having difficulties in coming up with a pleasing idea. I think the cave idea (the image with green) might be worth exploring more.

Anton: I like the first one as it seems like you're entering the cave to discover a village. I think it makes a juxtaposition (see I learned something in English) between the outside world and the safety of the cave. I think the second one would work well too

@anton, really awesome that you went traditional on this one. I wish I did my thumbnails in my sketchbook too, but I'm sort of running low on art supplies, lol. As for my choice, definitely #1, go cave all the way.

Ok I'm out of the running. Schedule wise there's just no time for it. Technically I can find time for it, but then my body will be stressed... Good luck everyone and godspeed.

I think i'm out of this one as well, I don't have the time to finish it to a standard i'm ready to show. It hasn't come together how I would have liked, partially because I've been really busy and havn't devoted much time to it. Good luck to everyone else
