    Cosmic Inhabitant's Sketchbook

Hello peoples! I've been drawing for awhile, but haven't gotten very serious in my art education until recently. So since I've began to take a more formulated path to learning how to draw I decided to start up this sketchbook to showcase some of my stuffs along the way and for any helpful information. Like I said earlier, I haven't been taking much of a formal approach to learning to draw previously to this. (i.e. informative art books, videos, websites, etc.) But hopefully over time their will be improvement.

With that all said, it begins!

So I am going to be going through The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides. I have been going through the book on and off for several months so I am currently up to section 15 within the book. I use to have an old sketchbook on here previously (Universal Inhabitant). I had a lot of my progress up to this point in that thread. But before I start back into the book I just wanted to do some warm up of some of the lessons in the book to get back into the flow of it.

Here's a link to an imgur album of all the stuff I post here - https://imgur.com/a/XMgFD (For full resolution images, ease to just browse images alone, and archiving purposes just in case anything happens to the site, or my thread.)

I love the color choices and the general look of that mossy tree. It's so soft and warm.

@ Fujii - Hey, thanks for the kind words!

I have started to continue through the Natural Way to Draw book now. So here are some gesture drawings and a sustained study. I kinda diverged from the original method laid out in the book of the scribble drawings. I still do a few as described by the book, but for the most part since it has you doing so many I am looking into other methods of doing gesture drawings. Also some quick photo studies.

Messing around with the settings on this old HP scanner to try to improve the quality of these scanned images. Might just try to use my smartphone next post.

Some more NWTD stuff and photo studies. My scanner seems to be a bit better compared to my cheap old smartphone. So I'll be trying different methods with my scanner to see if I can make it any better over time.

Hey man, cool sketchbook you're getting started here, glad to see a decent volume of work.

It's immediately obvious that you're studies are way stronger than your imaginative work, which is pretty common, it's way easier to copy an image than to pull something from your head. You need to find a way to apply that knowledge. Personally, I'd recommend twisting what's going on in your studies, to force you to think more. If you're doing a study of a chopper for instance, turn it into a heli from the far future, using the original image as a guide. This should stop you from becoming a human photocopier haha.

Also, what are you currently trying to learn at the moment? I'm not getting a lot of focus from what's going on here, you seem to just be messing about, drawing whatever. While any drawing is good, doing too many things at once is really inefficient. Pick one fundamental, e.g. composition, and work on it solidly for a couple of weeks. When you've seen a noticeable improvement there, switch to figure drawing solidly for a few weeks, doing a little bit of composition every now and then so you don't forget, and then change it to something else, rinse and repeat.

Also are you aiming to be professional, or is this just a hobby? Keep up the good though man!

@ Oliver Titley - Yo! Thanks! Yeah it's a bit tough to come up with a design from imagination and to represent it as well as a photo study for me lol. I do need to incorporate reference images whilst doing stuff from imagination more often, that is true. I'll try out that method of exaggerating/altering a photo of something.

As for what my focus is at the moment, I mainly am just going through the sorta "beginner" books, currently The Natural Way to Draw with some supplementary observational studies on the side (sometimes real life, but mostly photos). My plan is to go through a few beginner books, like Loomis, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Keys to Drawing, ect. Than, after I've gone through a few of those I'll start on one particular fundamental art discipline to go through at a time. I'm not sure if this is a good method or not, but I think it makes it where things are more organized and have a clear path of learning. So basically my plan is to go through several of the beginner books, then begin a specific fundamental and get to a high level with it and then move on to the next one. This is just my thought process at the moment, this plan is not in any way solidified and is up to scrutiny.

Well if you mean to make money off of my art, than I'd say yes though that isn't gonna happen anytime soon most likely lol. But, I don't even know if I'd want to even take the route of working for a company, I'd want to make my own content with my art for the most part.

But with all that aside here are some images. Did a timed little exercise, and tried out doing my gesture drawings with my tablet today.

Started doing "Study of the Bones" in NWTD, which entails making a contour drawing of a figure, then using a skeletal reference place the bones within the figure properly. I think placement wise of the bones it came out decent. As the book says, I tried to use the parts of the body where the bones are more visible on the figure as landmarks to help place them. Also, more of my own stuffs, I spent a bit of time on this one and had some references (although I don't think I looked at them enough) for my concept piece.

Woooohh, the website has been down for about a week and a half. I was thinking if I should move to another website or not, but good thing I decided to wait a few more days. Hopefully there's no major downtime like this again. While the site was down I've been focusing more on the Natural Way To Draw book, trying to get it over with faster, lol. So most of the stuff is an accumulation of just NWTD exercises for this post. Lots of gesture drawings, but as with all my post I just post the most decent looking ones of the bunch I can find, with maybe an occasional not so good one just to mix it up and sorta get a full scope.

More NWTD content. I've been deviating from how the book says to do gesture drawings to try and switch things up from the same old thing. Going through the "Figuary" lessons on YouTube from Love Life Drawing and also Proko videos.

More Nature Way to Draw related stuff. The book has added a bit of skeletal study exercises. I've been using random image references of the skeleton and also found some nice 3D rotatable skeleton diagram on a health site which isn't perfect art wise for use, but is pretty good. I think my drawing of the bones are a bit off when it comes to inserting them into a figure in any sort of dynamic pose. Trying to figure out how the 2 bones connect and interact especially when a figure is in any pose other than a default posture is kinda difficult. Gonna try to find a program/website with a 3D skeleton model that you can manipulate the joints in. Also did a still life which I haven't done in a while.

Some really great improvement in here! Your figures have some nice flow to them and your lines look confident. I'd suggest to play around with your line weight a bit more as you've done in some of your more finished stuff.

Anatomy studies are looking great too, although you seem to be neglecting the foot in a lot of your figures. If you feel like that's the case, would love to see some more in depth studies of the feet. Keep it up!
