    CHOW 454 Janus Final

    CHOW 454 Janus Final

    Character of the Week #454
    Janus
    Deadline - Monday, January
    15st 8AM GMT

Janus is an ancient Roman God who has two faces, meaning he is able to look in two directions at once and able to see into both the past and future. He can symbolise many things, the beginning and end of war, movement from one place to another or the passage of time or duplicity, but particularly the transition between the old year and new year.

The Janus you design must embody change, so each of his (or her) faces must differ in some way to represent two differing ideas or concepts that can be travelled / transitioned between. Does your Janus represent the young turning to old or perhaps evil into good? (Or vice versa) Your character could represent darkness changing into light, summer into winter, etc. Choose any two opposites you like and combine them into one character.

    Further opposite ideas:
Fat / Thin. Science / nature. Male / female. Moon / sun. Fantasy / sci fi. Land / water. Fear / bravery. Sickness / health. etc.

    Here is my final entry

Love some of your entries here, amazing job great looking designs. I wish I could draw simple ideas like you could, such discipline

I tried to capture this idea of embodiment by a simple decision to treat a bird that is flying to you. Both made decisions that determines their character, at least that is what i tried to communicate. Two sides decide opposite of other, of death and life. Tried to put color theories at work to guide the eye, maybe improve the narrative. Also the design of the characters, i wanted them to be distinct

Done on iPad since I didn't have time to work on it while I was home, had to draw while I was on the job. xD
Anyway, it's representing the beginning and the end, the beginning not able to speak and to give advice how to live your life and the end with his eyes closed bringing the final justice without seeing who you are because, in the end, all are equal. So... here is the end bringing his final justice...

Some flaws in this, but wanted to put it up in the event of any crits.

    Poll up.

    EDIT
I will be making a slight change to the rules from now on, in that entrants must have two works in progress displayed in the wips thread to reach the poll. (wips in final thread are now optional) That's what the wips thread is for, and it seems a shame to disqualify someone for not putting up two wips here when they are clearly posted elsewhere. If i'm going to disqualify someone I want it to be for the art, not a technicality.

I will try and do some crits later in the week, please feel free to add any comments of your own.

So, Adult Swim just showed a battle of Janus VS a Cyclops. And It was amazing. Thank you all for your submissions and hard work in development.

    Voted for Seksi and BenQ.

Seksi, cool image, nice to look at. I wish you'd emphasized the difference between the two masks more as they kind of look similar.

BenQ I like what you did with the mechanical vs. organic mix in your character. I'm not sure I see the difference between the wars but I liked your drawing because it retained that classical element from Roman culture/art, and actually really lends itself to the true definition of Janus' duality in terms of past and future. IMO you accidentally nailed the theme the best.

Can't comment on the others in detail, a lot of the work seems unfinished. Back when I used to do these much of it wouldn't have made the final vote. It's cool to see people still participating, this is the best way to improve. Cheers all.
