Someone suggested a long time ago that I practiced stuff on drawabox.com, but I never got into it. I looked at it today and the course is what I need at the moment, so I'm going to shift from Proko's anatomy to drawabox stuff starting at the very first lesson :>.

What I did here was I drew a line with a ruler and a graphite pencil, then tried to follow it using the movement of my shoulder. For the second photo's bottom half, that was a muscle memory exercise using, what he called, ghosting.

The lines that I'm drawing keep getting curved or is off by a bit.

I've been out for the past few days since I got grounded, only way I can post is through another computer which is a pain. I practiced lines for a few days and worked on that friend's bday present, then but after that few I just worked on the present. The planes practice for the lines were making me frustrated since I'm still not good at ghosting. The present is a drawing of Todoroki from My Hero Acadamia.

The computer that I'm using can't rotate photos < /3.

I was trying to critique myself and noticed that all the facial features to the last drawing are pretty mediocre, so I'm going to try to fill a whole page of eyes, noses, lips, and hair one each. One page of eyes or an extra half if I redo too much by the end of this week.

I did the contour outline for the eyes yesterday.

I shaded one eye yesterday and an eye plus a half today. I'm really thinking about doing digital soon; I don't know when, but maybe in September or October maybe when I've studied the human body enough. Looking at Noah Bradley's, Ross Tran's, and Jaime Jones's digital art makes me want to do it.

I think if you're going to be doing all these portraits of anime characters you should at least try and stylize and exaggerate them a bit more. Otherwise you're taking the source material and making it more boring. Consider your most recent portrait, look how much character the reference from the anime has, on the other hand consider how much character the photo reference has. It would be fine, but every anime or video game portrait you do looks like this, consider the personality of the character and base the drawing around that.

Thanks for the tips Jams; I'll make sure to remember your advice for next time :>

Yesterday I overslept and woke up at 5 AM : ^). I made sure to do a little more than I usually do, so I did 2 and a half eyes today. I'm getting kind of sick of eyes so I'm doing one eye one nose tomorrow.

I'm going to drop the facial feature studies since they're boring after the first and second ones. so here's some boring line practice lol. These make me really frustrated, but it's needed for the drawabox course. I'm just going to do a little of the lines practice for about 30 minutes a day, then focus on the Proko stuff from where I left off.

Wasn't able to practice yesterday since I had to do an essay last minute and today I did about 30 minutes for lines and maybe 20 for the figures. It's not a lot of time, but tomorrow I'll be sure to spend more time practicing. Also, might be moving on to the muscles on the Proko course, since I'm getting comfortable drawing the breast, I think.

Why can nobody seem to get my name right its only 5 letters, I'm not asking for much here. But really, I thought about what I said, and realized I probably wasn't communicating what I was thinking very well. I think with your portraits you are trying to do two things at once. You are trying to do a somewhat academic piece, which is referenced and realistically rendered. But also trying to draw your favourite anime and video game characters. I'm not saying that you can't interpret these characters in a way that you would like. More I just don't think if you're at the stage where you are doing these portrait studies in charcoal you should be applying the anime coat of paint (figuratively speaking) over the top.

If you want to learn how to draw these anime characters, pick up some markers and pens and get going, but I think there is a disconnect with the media that you are using.

Maybe you should change your name to 4 letters haha. I'm not going to draw any anime or cartoon styled characters anytime soon. When I first started and getting advice from YouTube, a reoccurring tip was to practice realism and that's why I did the Istebrak challenge. I agree that charcoal isn't being used correctly; people always would say that I needed more contrast in my drawings, so I took the easy way and just added charcoal to the graphite to make it look darker without using the charcoals properties. When I see more experienced artist use charcoal, like Yong Chen, they use charcoal as if they were painting. Since I don't want to draw stylized things, do you think I should just continue studying realism until I feel like I'm ready?

Broke my promise for yesterday. I got really tired and went to sleep after doing the lines. Today I did the usual lines and figure drawings, but after two drawings I got really bored and I get lazy, so I think that's a sign I should move on to the next step.

Just did notes yesterday and today I did more notes from Proko, lines, and figures. I started doing the lines practice with my elbow and it's much more confortavle. I can draw straight lines with it for the most part, but I often get the accuracy off and often overshoot the finish point. Also starting Proko's homework tomorrow.

Pretty happy that my ghost is getting better and now I can draw planes without it looking to messed up. Also started the Proko abs assignment; I don't know what I'm doing lol, but it's something.

This week is exam week and I have to take it easy with the practice stuff, so I'm only doing draw a box things. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just wasting my time doing lines for 30 minutes straight every day.

Here's my practice stuff from the past 3 days. I would say I'm good with lines now, so I'm going to shift from lines to ellipses. Also, I need to do this project for biology where I need to shade and shade 15 different birds by Friday lol and to fit in time I'm going to have to skip out on Proko practice next week < / 3.

Did that science project today. I'm only going to spend one hour tops on each bird, so it's gonna be piss poor shading lol. Oh and forgot to mention like 2 months ago that the t-shirt design I did for my high school class won 1st place < 3.

    Thanks :>

I did more of the bio project again today. I would much rather do drawabox lessons than something I'm not even going to study in the next few months :<.

It's been about a year since I started drawing, so time for a lot of redraws :>>>. I'm going to do the first thing I ever did when I started and it was that 3/4 view portrait with a shirtless girl. Just doing the sketch compared to the painting is already making me pretty impressed with myself and I only used one reference just for the hair 8].

I remember showing my 8th grade art teacher it and I asked for feedback on it. The tone of her voice was sincere and enthusiastic; she said that it was perfect, but gave me no feedback at all.

Wish I could've done more, but I had a really busy day today. First time going to the gym and I can't move my upper body correctly lol. I'm pretty happy with it so far, but the eyes look a little crossed and I moved the lips up a bit and made it a bit fuller. Thought the nose ring looked stupid so I'm not doing it.

Hi Zaulta, i think your drawings and studies would benefit from taking more time in the measuring step. Check out this lesson from proko: http://www.proko.com/drawing-measuri.../#.WxO4_kiFOUk
This kind of tricks helps a lot in copying the right proportions. You dont need to use a real plumb lines or grids, if you train to imagine the angles and orizontal or vertical lines you should be faster and more accurate in time.

    @All
Thanks for the recommendation. I already use that technique haha, but I only use it when I'm doing a study irl, if it's flat i just use my fingers to measure. I do need to work on accuracy though, so I will try to imagine the lines :>

No matter how many times I redraw the eye on the right it always looks too big on the mirror and now it's stained with charcoal, so I'm going to try to redraw the sketch tomorrow. I think one of my biggest downfalls is that the sketches I do are almost never correct and I always fix things on the way and that's making me having to redraw my drawings all the time. I say that the side on the left looks really nice though.

For some reason my teachers like to assign a lot of busy work projects near the end of the year, so that's why I couldn't do anything. This and next week are going to be very packed with school, the gym, and art stuff. I looked at the drawabox site and found out I've been doing lesson one wrong the whole time lol. I was only drawing on the straight line once when I was suppose to be doing it 8 times.

Also, the redraw of that 3/4 view lady is going to be on hold. A few days ago I've tried resketching it like 8 times and it didn't work out.

Just trying to get back into draw a box lessons. I'm going to focus more on draw a box than proko lessons, since it's easier at the moment and less time consuming.

Forgot to upload yesterday, so I'm uploading today's with yesterday's. Still trying to work on circles, but they keep coming out as ovals and I think I forgot how to do lines lol. I'm not spending a lot of time on drawing, but once school is more out of the way, I'll be able to do a lot more with my free time.

Exams are this week : ^). Here's my stuff from yesterday and today. Using my elbow pivot was a mistake lol. If I want to do really long lines and curved lines I need to use my shoulder, so I'm going to start using the shoulder pivot again.

My practices from today and yesterday. I was pretty pissed when I was practicing today, because my sister found out what I was practicing and then she mocks what I'm doing. I'm moving on to circles and perspective now. I've been doing lines for over a month and I feel like I wasted my time.
