    Methods of measurement

Are there any other ways to keep track of proportions in space other than using circles?

Bump. The reason I ask is that I wanna make sure everything is structurally sound when I'm making something up from imagination. If there aren't any other ways, do I just lack practice in keeping proportions via studying from reference?

Well, you can keep measurements on x and y axes, but you can't on the z axis? I'm just confused because I never know how far something should go when I'm making the proportions up on my own, when in Loomis it describes using ellipses.
