Do you draw these poses out of your head, or look at miltary reference? I know I look at war photos for poses and such. And by looking at all of these sketches, it gave me inspiration to start getting my ass in gear and producing more concepts haha.

Of course I have reference! There's always a need to look at references. But I don't copy direct from pictures....its more like I have a collection of pictures which I look through once in a while and have an idea what it looks like. Then you go ahead and draw. Sort of combine elements from different pictures before you draw them.

I find it hard to believe if an artist told me he/she doesn't need references. You'd still need to know how mechanical joints work if you're drawing robots or how airframes and aerodynamics work when you draw airplanes. Not to copy, but to have an idea how it works so you can make your ideas believeable while still looking absurdly out of this world. So its good to have a library of pictures to look through.

Ian (red mimic) errr what do you mean by process work?

I get the feeling I won't draw as much these few days....just bought Halflife 2. :p

Ya I am doing the same thing with reference atm. I got a pic from the newspaper of like 8 troops, and Im using it to just draw 4 of them. And ya HL2 is addicting I finally beat it yesterday but I found the ending so confusing.

The location design will come later. I'm still struggling to finalize the defensive droids used by the sniper to defend the bridge. Its just standard stuff, nothing extraordinary.

I've got the story tied down but I'm not ready to start yet and these sketches aren't finals....in fact I don't think they will ever make it into the panels I'm not ready to share the storyline yet Its unpolished as it is, gotta consult a couple of friends for authenticity first.

As for the tactics....that's a different thing altogether.....I'm mixing MOUT methods with the new weapons I've come up with so its going to take some figuring out. And that ties in with the location design too....its all going to take a while.

Great work, especially like the weapons and generall feel of modern warfare to it all, my service in the army ended just a week ago and Iv'e tried all kind of weapons ranging from handguns to sniper rifles, love the detail you put into the weaponparts, kinda makes me remember all the time I spent cleaning weapons tho, heavy machineguns are a real bitch to clean >_<

Jove, the cleaning of weapons isn't the issue, its being hassled constantly by the NCOs for the state of cleaniness of the weapons that are 20 years old and can never be free from carbon fouling that kills me Some of the best moments during my service with my army was watching buddies getting chewed up by NCOs for a rusty weapon....have to stand at attention and try not to laugh....Those were the days. Glad you liked the stuff....Hopefully it didn't remind you too much of the hard times.

Kortex, thanks for the comments...keep that flash animation coming.

Darrel, thanks man, don't mind me for borrowing the wash to work on I'll have to consider all ways to make this more efficient, no way I'm going to spend 1 pen on 3 pages and change a pen....they are expensive! LOL

    Can't get enough this stuff!
as others have said before, your gun designs are suberb! this is a good example of where knowledge of a subject, like guns and modern military equipment, can really add realism, detail, and overall badassness to an artists concepts. I like the machine gun design especially, it fits with the overall slightly futuristic feel but is very familiar and remniscent of guns like the M60.
I still haven't finished going through this stuff, but all of it's going in my "Great Art" folder!

That scribbly technique you have going on there is seriously eye-catching. I really like it.

    planes and angles

each angle of a plane changes
u have to say is it more in the light or less in the light
if that same plane is on his head
    his chest
his gun and that plane is a light or med or dark
then all the planes at that angle should be consistant
unless the fabric effects it then u say how much light will be lost.

Yeah that makes sense. I'll need to rework that piece....

Was learning about drapery in painting after I did this piece and form, function, gravity all affects how it looks.

Ah well.....2 weeks of holidays to rework tonnes of stuff.

    perspective too

if it moving away from you then in order to turn it
away u need to darken cause there less light.
u may have multiple light sources u may have reflected light.
there lots of questions to ask urself.
warm colors come towards and cools retreat.
so may say to ur self i want to push that way from me
that would be a cool color or let say a 7 grey.
save urself alot of energy too by not drawing into shadows.
maybe more detail in the light so ur making me look there
    at a detail.

Yeah gotta fix the tones first before going into colors.

Also I find digital painting can throw you off when you zoom in to the details and forget the big picture. Gotta paint more.

This stuff is great darth, its awesome to start from the beginning, scrolling down to see your progress.

I love your cross hatching style and technique, I think it might bring it out even more with some really dark areas, either solid or really thick line. I don't mean to get rid of the cross hatching that you do, its what makes your work you. Just some contrast so that some of the shots aren't so busy will help to pop the characters out and ability to discern the scene better.

I really really need to show this thread to my husband tomorrow! He is also a gun nut and will LOVE the work you put into your designs. He'll probably want to post some critiques too knowing him hehe.

Keep this up, wonderful to see you evolve through this.
