    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round #400 The Elemental Dragon Lords

    Topic:
#400 The Elemental Dragon Lords! *MILESTONE EDITION*

Hey everyone. This round is a very, very special round. We've made it to another significant milestone. One that is sure to be very fun. Both Rob and Scorge have made some awesome suggestions not only with what to do for this round, but what direction to take COW. This is also a wonderful opportunity to reinvent the COW mascot. So, without further ado, let's jump into the brief...

COW #400. WOW! It's still going strong despite some growing pains in the rebuilding process but we're kicking this round off with the theme ELEMENTAL DRAGON LORDS! There will be four briefs available for you to work on. All four are based on the elements of nature: Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. Each element is represented by a mighty dragon. Every dragon is grand, majestic, fierce, and powerful. Many look to them as gods, even creators of the world. Their legacy survives millenia as their legends have been passed down through the years, generation after generation. Some disbelieve in their existence as they are very mysterious and elusive, seldom seen by humans. These are no ordinary fire breathers! These dragons are lords and masters that possess a higher power and intelligence unmatched by any other dragons. We're going to be designing these beasts for our extra special COW #400. You have a full two months to work on this!

Four briefs are listed below and you may use this thread to post your wips for any of your chosen concepts. There will be separate finals threads for each brief so once finished, be sure to post your dragons to the appropriate thread. YES you may work on multiple briefs if you like which is why we have two months to work on this. The option to work on one or multiple is completely yours. LET'S DESIGN SOME DRAGONS!

    The Destructive Fire Dragon
-The embodiment of fire! This mighty dragon has a lust for destruction and an insatiable appetite for chaos. Its rage is almost unstoppable and its fire hotter than any conceived by man or nature. It has the ability to turn entire cities into ash within hours if it desires so. When not on a rampage, it rests dormant within volcanic caverns until some unlucky fool inadvertently awakens it from its slumber
    -Must be a dragon
    -Associated with the fire element
    -Has a taste for destruction

    The Magnificent Water Dragon
-A stark contrast to its fire counterpart, this water dragon has a more peaceful nature, however if angered it can create mighty title waves and gigantic maelstroms capable of swallowing entire fleets. This dragon is the embodiment of water and rules over all creatures that dwell in the water with all of its beauty.
    -Must be a dragon
    -Associated with water element
    -Has a very beautiful appearance

    The Colossal Earth Dragon
-The largest of all the elemental dragons, the embodiment of the Earth. This dragon is the size of a mountain and most of the time, mistaken for one. During most of its existence, it simply slumbers beneath the surface but when active, each step it takes is capable of causing the most intense earthquakes. Its roar can be heard reverberating for miles causing the cities of the land to shake.
    -Must be a dragon
    -Associated with the Earth element
    -Of a colossal size

    The Ancient Sky Dragon
-The oldest and wisest of the four dragon lords. As the embodiment of the sky, this dragon is though to be the creator of the universe. It constantly flies through the sky watching and learning of the ways of those who live below. Its power is beyond measure with a capacity to create thunderous tornadoes and massive hurricanes. However, its keen judgement and wise demeanor allows it to be merciful if needed.
    -Must be a dragon
    -Associated with sky/air/wind element
-Has an ancient and wise appearance and nature

Okay COWies, let's sketch some dragons!!!

I can't believe more people are not getting on these amazing topics for just studies sake. What happened? Did digital painting and art just die over night somewhere with all the chaos in the world, technology advancements, and art being taken out of schools, along with corporate greed, and the bar of imagery being set so high to have to resort to painting over 3D models and shyt?

If you can't make a finished piece at least get on board to explore and have some fun with your art through experimentation and pushing your limits with studies, and most importantly......LEARN!

Here's a little study I kicked off for the Destructive Fire Dragon. The whole thing was painted from imagination and I experimented a lot with color on this one. It took a ton of time to do, a whole hour and a half, broken up into thirds, being 30 minutes per session.

I second Lege on this one, who doesn't love dragons, and why wouldn't we all be jumping at the bit here? Drew this guy up with the topic in mind, but it doesn't really fit any of the subjects the way I'd like it to so I'll call it practice.

    Nice work guys!

Time and energy is in short supply at the moment, but I fully intend to participate in this one.

It won't be a half-measure when I do though - so you better take advantage of the headstart!

    Yeah - them's fightin' wurds!

...ahh... that takes me back to the old days... mumble mumble... last man standing... mumble mumble... sigh...

I thought I would at least get started on a design for this one. Dragons are always a fun subject to reinvent. I'm doing a bit of a study on this one, starting with a muted palette from an Arizona landscape. If I keep going with this, I will definitely take out the photo, as this isn't meant to be a paint-over, just a study so far.

@Scorge: Absolutely! Great piece!!! Like a night dragon.

@Mythmaker: looking forward to your posts man!

Some air dragon action...Just getting a feel for these things. Compositions can get interesting using the whole body as Scorge has demonstrated professionally.

Everytime I start feeling good about something I'm working on another side of me comes out and makes me find reasons not to like what I'm working ,or feel like it's just not good enough. I guess that's a good thing to some extent, or maybe it's just nothing will ever be good enough period cause it could always be better. So I was liking the progress of this Earth dragon until I realized it didn't fit the brief cause it's not very colossal. Hopefully I can find away to do something about that but I'm already getting visions of another concept pertaining to the cause.......

Scorge: Air dragon is super awesome man! I love it! I like it how it seems to more or less glide through the air cause the wings seem like they'd never be big enough to sustain it's weight in actual consistent flight.

This is so utterly butterly awesome, love the transparent belly, strange that the burger she's eaten looks like a small dragon....just joking , such amazing design and beautiful beautiful painting skills. You have inspired me to pick up pencil and just dive in with an idea or two. Thank you much.

SummerTheBummer: Definitely number your concepts next time to make it easier for people to suggest what is what. I liked all your concepts and couldn't resist rendering them out as value studies. I think they all have potential based on how you assign them to the topics and elaborate more on the cause. Really nice drawings man, have fun, and good luck.

I am glad you liked my dragons enough to want to take the time to do that! I will make sure to number my sketches from now on! 1. and 2. I was definitely thinking air element and 4, 5 and 6 are water element but they don't really feel grand enough to be DRAGON LORDS, they look like normal/lesser dragons to me. I am going to draw some more, with some ancient-ness.

Welcome Gee! Great start, my only suggestion would be to consider eye placement and head shape. It can make or break a design. Looking forward to your entry, and I'm assuming you were referring to my dragon with the transparent belly?

Oh, I meant to show you a paintover for that as well. Not exactly a paintover, but an escalation of your design and how position of features and the overall silhouette can make a huge impact in the power and intention of your creature. So, what I did here was take one of your ideas, expand upon it, in expression and the silhouette, then push that even further in the third one to really get a sense of how menacing this guy could be in a smooth operator kind of way. So I thought of a snake.

Wowee! I love what you've done with the head here, it amazing!! You have given it such personality and menace. I am having trouble with getting my messages and posting to appear on this site, its most annoying and a bit of a major handicap. ( I'm not even sure when or if this posting will appear, it seems to take about a week for some things to show up ) Also I am a noob on here so am still learning sense the posting relating to you wonderful dragon painting not being linked to your image, sorry about that.
I took your notes and applied them , or should that be tried to on three heads of my own , it was fun but hard work I suppose it gets easier the more time you do it. I am really really grateful for your kind help. I did want to ask what brush do you use and also when approaching the design do you splurge down a broad shape and work into that or do you start with an eye or a mouth placement first?
Again many thanks for your pointers, I aim to get there and be joining in these COW challenges. In the meantime I hope these issue with the ability to post are ironed out , is it because I am new and everything has to be okay by a third party before they are allowed up? Anyone else facing these problems? It can be very off putting not being able to communicate freely. I did post three other dragon images and I have no idea why they never appeared or if they even will
