    1. Philosopher in meditation-Rembrandt

Chose this painting by Rembrandt due to his use of lighting and values to create atmosphere

The light from the window puts just enough emphasis on the dude in the left-his figure is still low contrast but higher contrast then the rest of the painting. He's also a dark figure surrounded by lighter areas.
Artist also uses repetition-the woman lit by the fire mirrors the male lit by the window. Upper and bottom stairs mirror each other. Concentric areas of value are repeated-dark border circle surrounds lighter area which surrounds middle black circle.

    Critique and advice welcome.

Really not happy with this one but ran out of time.

Despite the busy foreground, its low values mean that it doesn't distract the viewer.
The high values of the middle ground buildings are places against lower value trees/roofs in order to seperate it from the background.

    3. English tank in streets of Jerusalem-Wyeth

Chose this painting due to how the painting frames and leads the eye towards the tank

    Name: 3.jpg
Views: 669
Size: 297.1 KB

    Repetition- the arches are repeated
Emphasis-The tank due to dramatic lighting and the arches leading the eye towards it. The line of bricks on the front arch also lead towards the tank. Juxtaposition of tank in cobbled street emphasis by the angular shadows surrounding the tank, as everything else is more organically shaped.
Secondary-the soldier. Body surrounded by darker shadows on left and backlit on right.

Rhythm-The line through the arches that is created. The perpendicular cross on the floor. Horizontal lines of tank perpendicular to vertical solider and arches.
    Continuity-Curved leading arc towards tank.
Variety-Brick and pavement stones irregular placement.
Balance- Tank placed quite far back, so solider in front balances it out.
Economy-Front arch and pavement more detailed than background arches (individual bricks compared to solid value)

Chosen because this wizard manages to make bog standard landscapes look dynamic

Rhythm- The arcs made by the cliff, river , darker trees on top of the cliff and tree trunk. Also the arcs made by the the placement of the rocks on the beach, the shadows on the beach and river and the lighter areas of the cliff. Basically everything connects to from an arc. The gaps in the tree continue the arc made by the top edge of the cliff.

    Continuity- As above.

Repetition-The left and right cliff portions
Emphasis-The cliff. Has the most detail and contrast. Trees and shadows on beach/river also form arcs that lead towards it. Darker trees on top make it stand out against the light sky.

Variety- The cliff shapes and the heights of the trees on top of it.

Balance-Dark values on top of the cliff are surrounded by the dark values in the tree and the shadows on beach. Detailed cliff is balanced by the addition of the tree and rocks in the foreground

    Economy-Cliff is most detailed.

    5-The icebergs-Frederic Edwin Church

    Picked for its atmospheric quality

    Rythym in the waves.
    Repetition-smaller iceberg in distance

Middle iceberg stands out due to its simplicticy compared to the other, ore detailed icebergs.

Dark values in bottom right are balanced by the dark value of the sea just at the horizon.

Honetsly I'm not sure I've got the focal point right. My eyes are drawn to the middle iceberg but logically I feel like the wrecked ship mast on the bottom is meant to be emphasised.

Nice work on your studies! Really capture the values of the painting quite decently.
You could further improve your studies by sharpening the edges and take more time applying more accurate values; don't be afraid of blacks and whites for now.
I also like to add noise and sharpen after I'm done painting. It'll look more traditional feel to it.

    Cheers.
