    CHOW 433 Pestilence knight

    CHOW 433 Pestilence knight

    Character of the Week #433
    Pestilence Knight
    Deadline - Sunday, August 13th 10PM GMT

In the dark times when Albion is under the pall of disease order breaks down as many become desperate and delirious as death nears the afflicted. Infected zones are all but abandoned by the local barons, which become rife with violence and looting as the unaffected risk their health to steal from the weak before the barons move in again.

The only hope is the pestilence knights, once proud warriors they too have been stricken with disease, and so wander these plague zones cutting down bandits where other knights fear to tread. Exiled, the knight’s armour is rusted and pitted, their swords drip with foul disease that pours down from their own broken flesh. To the infected these warriors are saviours, but to those outside they are death incarnate, whose beaklike helmets (modelled after plague doctors) strike fear into those who shun their dying brethren.

Please note this is not a warhammer fan art contest, any followers of the Dreadfather Nurgle won’t be disqualified, but please don’t feel constrained by a particular fantasy universe and try to be completely creative and original with your designs.

    • Male or female human
    • Visibly diseased.
    • Knight armour (heavily worn)
    • Wears a beaked plague doctor mask (may be a shaped helmet, etc)
    • Genre is fantasy horror

Cool topic! Here's a rough sketch of my knight.

Might add or remove stuff or even change the proportions, we'll see.

I have a lot of doodles for this one already, but I can't really figure out which direction I want to take him. There's so many details up in the air still and what kind of style I want to put him in.

How do you figure out what features and style you end up going with? Am i just too indecisive?

I came up with this idea, gonna do some changes in the overall design into something more ~ dark to
show his disease in some way and work on his "Heavily worn armour"

Unfortunately it looks so boring that I am thinking I am gonna have to change everything, probably gonna change the pose gesture to one where he is standing with most weight on only one leg, and bent it a little more.
Also I wanted him to be standing in front of an entrance, maybe an old church or a some portal, not sure yet.
Probably gonna do some more studies and sketches on traditional and then move to digital

EDIT 1: also he looks really 2D, gotta work on structure

SgtCostello: I think you have to decide more of the character's background and what you want him to be. Is he loyal and brave, staunchly defending the infected, or is he bitter and jaded after being afflicted and is lashing out at the healthy? Is he strong with only physical symptoms (boils, etc) or frail and debilitated?

Vanvanmar: Don't forget this is a character competition, be sure not to spend ages painting a beautiful doorway/ entrance for him to stand in front of and then have to rush the knight himself as deadline looms. Only worry about setting if your'e sure you have the time.

Fllamjr: Minor niggle but the mace looks strange to me held backwards like that.

@Hubian thank you very much ! I also really liked so I hope I will have the chance to do the full illustration, not only the character later
@Moirae I will keep that in mind, thank you. Probably gonna work on the character with a gray plain background from now.

Did some studies again, which only prove that the previous ones were done poorly and without much planning.

I think it loos better now but it still has this "plain" feeling to it, which I suppose I am not gonna get rid off until I actually create something from my head, not only using information that is already there. Thinking about changing his armor a bit to look more like crown.
Also I can`t believed I keep the same gesture that I had already decided would not be a great fit. Gotta make him lean forward more.

I think I might go with his skin being burned off or something. Here is something. I've been working on some more designs, will update soon. Everybody is looking great, especially like where yours is going Vanvanmar

This is pretty much where I'm landing on right now. I feel like it's too bland or uninteresting and I'm not sure if it's the design, pose, or maybe just lack of good form/depth?

Hey guys, just to give a little update: i have done some studies of light and material and started actually painting the thing

But my current painting looks like a Terminator Mosquito and it just look so bad that I got the urge to trow everything away and start from scratch. I did three finished sketches and it does not see like those helped me at all. Not sure if it is my lack of knowledge about armor, or about design, or my process as a whole. I think I will just back up and study more about these things.

    Also
@Discorave that brushwork gesture looks really nice
@MikeWest those materials look awesome even though they are pretty simple. Your thumbnail could use some more work though.

I think it all comes down to the overall anatomy of the knight, i would suggest you doing long sketches and checking proportions, and placement of the body features.

Initial sketch. The horse will just be sketched in simply, I'm going to be concentrating on the knight.

Vanvanmar: It might be a good idea to take a photo of a friend or yourself standing the same way as your knight as reference for a more natural stance, he's looking a little stiff at the moment. The studies you have done are a good step, but you aren't looking at the photos closely enough. In the bottom most helmet there are shades of brown in the shadow, whilst there are yellow tints in the highlights. It's these touches that give it a more natural look rather than plain grey all the way across. Lastly, google images of a "bascinet" it's a type of French helm with a pointed nose that would be a good staring point for a beaked helm if you are still worried about the mosquito look.

You should rename the contest into plague doctor knight. So many beak helmets!

edit: I just realized that the plague doctor mask is part of the prompt - shame on me.

Thanks Tiggeraz, it's always nice to hear from you. The nurse will take you back to your room now. Also stick around as next weeks challenge will be genre: humour, which could be right up your tiger shaped alley.

Jaxeller: The lower half of your character lacks a bit of shape to my eye. He has wide shoulders, yet seemingly no waist or hips, just the same width the rest of the way down.

    Progress, crits welcome.
