Neat! I think we have a potential winner here. Looking forward to see the finished piece.

Hola, some cool stuff goin on here.

Vanvanmar- I find doing material studys from life is a better way to learn the way of the material plus natural light, but hey that's just me, also it doesn't work on all materials for example infected skin might be hard to come by in real life.

    Some progress things.

After pulling an all-nighter, I think I'm beginning to understand "rendering"?

SgtCostello: I know you said you spent all night rendering, but I think your first image has a better sense of lighting and form, as well as legibility. Your second image, the painted one, looks rather flat while also being harder to read. In these challenges, you are allowed to simply submit nice flat colored drawings. That goes for character concept art in general as well, though a painted image looks nicer. Though, of course, it needs to be painted well, otherwise it comes off as confusing.

A good way to learn to paint, though, is to do so in grayscale, rather than in color. You are able to focus on form, lighting, and value without having to worry about color at the early stage. Adding in color is simple, via an overlay or multiply layer. I did this piece recently, and you can see how I turn a grayscale painting into one with color. Sure, it's an extra step, but, at least for me, I think painting in gray first yields better results. I recommend at least trying it out.
