CHOW 431 Deadworld Lumberjack :: FINALS

CHOW 431 Deadworld Lumberjack :: FINALS
    Character of the Week #431
    Deadworld lumberjack
    Deadline - Sunday, July 16th 10PM GMT

The planet of Th’rian has long been abandoned by a mysterious race after an asteroid threatened to wipe out all life upon its surface.
Humanity recently discovered the world and all the rich resources left behind on the lifeless planet. One surprising commodity is glasswood, a strange material garnered from the dead trees that now litter Th’rian. Due to its finite supply and the large cost of retrieving the material from the far off planet, glasswood is the new must have accessory, and the rich and the elite will pay top galactic dollar to have a cabinet of rare glasswood in their penthouse.
Th’rian no longer has an atmosphere, so wear exo suits fitted with heavy cutting gear to harvest the glasswood.

    -Male or female human
-Environmental suit / exosuit to boost user's strength and protect them from vacuum.

    -Logging gear attached to arms.
    - Optional - suits may also be fitted to counteract heavy gravity.

    The Rules:
    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.

This was a really fun challenge, and a good excuse to draw more mechs! The major points of the design are the roll cage, safety lighting, and the tools to include a grappling hook/stabilizing claw and a dual saw-blade. I went quadroped to account for uneven terrain and to work alongside the grapple to climb small cliffs and obstructions. The comm pack is to relay the coordinates of felled trees to a collector who will be nearby with a haul-type vehicle to gather the harvest. Let me know what you think and how I can improve!

This topic is now closed. Since there's only one entry, there won't be a poll.

However, SgtCostello, I'm afraid I have to cut your entry. The point of this challenge was to design an exo-suit, as in a mech that conforms to the character's body, and a character is the main focus. Your design is more of a vehicle, and most of your image/ design emphasizes that vehicle design rather than on the character. Your character seems more like a stand-in just to show scale. The theme is sci-fi, so even when you create simple stand-ins like that, it helps to design a more sci-fi version of that person, to help the two mesh together. The mech design looks ok, and I like the little sketches in your first wip image. But your final image is a little bland in comparison to your other sketches, where a 3/4 drawing would have been more dynamic and illustrative of the overall design. Also, being industrial machinery, it'd help to have some obvious wear and tear, grit, dirt, and ruggedness. At the moment, it looks too clean, too new.

In short, make sure your future designs are more-character focused.
