    CHOW 429 Guan Yu

    CHOW 429 Guan Yu

    Character of the Week #429

    Guan Yu
    Deadline - Sunday, June 18th 10PM GMT

Guan Yu perhaps one of the best known heroes from ancient Chinese history.
It is said that he once commanded a physician to operate on his injured arm whilst he drank and had dinner with friends, showing no hint of pain.

He has also been immortalised in fiction, most notably the “romance of the three kingdoms” and been raised to the position of a deity, and is worshipped to this day. He even has an airport named after him.
More recently Guan Yu’s worldwide fame has increased with his featuring in many video games (Particularly “Dynasty Warriors”, based on the “romance of the three kingdoms”) and films (even played by Donnie Yen).

Generally he is depicted as having a long, flowing black beard and wearing predominantly green. He is also rarely without his legendary weapon the “Green Dragon Crescent Blade” (sometimes blue depending on translation) which is a type of Guandao with a dragon design.

We would like you to redesign the legendary general in absolutely any genre you wish,
but infuse a flavour of ancient Chinese design to your character. (Even if you choose space opera, etc.)

    - Male or female human / humanoid
    - Regardless of genre chosen, designs (costume, etc) must be inspired by ancient China.
    - Wields a recognisable interpretation of his iconic “Green (sometimes blue) Dragon crescent blade”.
    - Open genre, sci fi, fantasy, etc.

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots with final entry.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photos, photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
    , rushed works/ rough sketches.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

Great topic and perfect timing for me, I have a few spare days next week to do something. Here are some quick pen sketches, playing with the pose and clothing. I'll do some more before deciding on a direction.

Here's my start from today, experimenting with the clothes (I don't like the belt so far)

Looking good so far, but no one seems to be taking advantage of the "any genre" angle.
Where is steampunk Guan Yu? Zombie horror Guan Yu? Star Wars Guan Yu with a light sabre guandao?

My initial sketches on paper. I think I'll go for fantasy but push the design.

While I have not had time to make something as I just joined, I think this is a really cool idea and I love all of your designs!

Moirae - I'm trying to stay away from scifi things at the moment, keeping this realistic to try and focus on basics, I'm concerned my materials, lighting and gestures aren't interesting enough. Trying to get a better sense of layering and movement in my piece but it's difficult.

Here is an update. I should have time over the weekend to push this a lot further.

Dayle: I think you need more reference for the pose. In some of your earlier sketches it seems like you have looked at some martial art poses, but it isn't showing in this latest image. For instance, I think it would be a bit more dynamic if his back was more arched as he is coming across a little ramrod straight to me. Also holding a spear like that people would tend to have one hand gripped palm forward and the other knuckle forward. As your character is now he is holding his weapon like a dumbbell with both hands the same way, and it looks a little awkward as it limits what you can do with his arms. Standing on one leg (or jumping) it seems more natural to have the arms thrown outwards (he can feasibly carry the weapon in one hand) Look at stills from old kung fu films and maybe even ballet if your going for a single leg pose. As for materials silks are very interesting due to their shininess and contrast well with duller fabrics.

WIP on final design - I'm going for a younger version of Guan Yu than he is traditionally depicted. A confident young officer.

Thanks Moirae - I will check the pose and fix it like you mentioned. Thanks for the idea with the silk fabric, it would definitely give me some new options.

Karanveer - I like this design a lot, very clear and good use of armour.

Started on a dieselpunk design, not certain if I will make the finals though.

Moirae - I really like the idea and the pose. Great job on keeping the design readable despite the details of his armor and accessories.
Dayle - Some great use of texture there. Almost makes him look like he has ice powers or an ice-like aura surrounding him.
