    Ear study

I'm struggling with my paints again (sometimes I make something good, and I'm happy with it, but then everything goes wrong and my next paintings just turn into sh*t), so I decide to try something small, something that I can make faster and analyse what is wrong.

I like the unfinished look of some paints, but mine, mine looks so weird, looks dirty, values look out of place. Anyway, I'm starting to think that the problem is my brush work, or I'm not giving the necessary attention to value.

    Please, help me.

The values are of in some places and you should check your drawing as well. But I think your main problem is edges. There are too many sharp edges which make you lose the form a bit. In the reference the only really sharp edges is where parts of the ear overlap.

If you want visible brush strokes within areas of continuous form make sure the value contrast is not to big because that will create sharp edges that make the form look

Reserve your lightest values for the small highlights, they are really important for showing the turning of the form.

If you want a really realistic look, also consider the texture of the skin in the reference photo.

    Hope any of this helps.

    Yeah, you definitely helped me.
The last studies that I made the contrast of values were always weird. I will try to fix that on the next study, and apply the things that you said.

    Anyway, thank you!
