... on second thought, pastel colors are boooring. After messing around with color more, this is the direction I'm going to go with. It's a balance of warm and cool, bright and muted, with clear focal points despite the busy design. Complicated color schemes are fun to make, but they become tiresome quick. I like this scheme a lot. I've also got the basic shadows down, though there's still much to do.

Is a mostly black design in the spirit of this challenge? If not I use the pink one instead.

Something that we should all keep in mind. The shape of the fashions have different design sensibilities from Western "normal" clothes. Mainstream western clothes are slim and tailored. Most Harajuku fashions have a silhouette that is chunky looking, even if it's minimalist or sexy. Google "American street style" or "European Street Style." Then "Harajuku fashion." Notice how body conscious a lot of the western people's clothes look. The images when you google "Harajuku fashion" are baggy, heavily layered, frumpy, or boxy. Even the most scanty dressed people have a lot of body real-estate taken up by clothes, tights, and accessories and the bodies sit more in the background than in western styles. The search results for "Minimalist Harajuku" is mostly not form fitting. "Gyaru" is a sexy Harajuku style and even that's not always very slim fit (my knowledge of Gyaru is limited though).

Nicolewg: Even the really goth influence examples I have seen in searches (I'm no expert by the way) seem to have a largeish area of another colour to contrast with the black, most often it seems a bright red skirt or something. At the moment it looks like just some bits of colour on her stockings and a few flowers in her hair / broaches etc. There are several layers to your design, what if her blouse was a different colour with a black dress etc? Most stereotypical harajuku stuff from what I've seen appears to be a riot of different colours rather than a single one like black or pink. Again I'm only working on what examples I've seen, I'm not pretending to know.

Made a start. Still have a lot more layers to add, going to pad her out with ammo pockets, etc.

Moira There's a few styles that can be worn monochrome. I committed to red accents though, so yeah, I can add more of it.

Re-worked my original concept. Had a lot of fun doing in the background details but I'm not going to be able to finish this one. Another one to add to my CHOW graveyard.
