    C.H.O.W 426 Harajuku Assassin

    Character of the Week #426

    Harajuku Assassin
    Deadline - Sunday, May 7th 10PM GMT

Harajuku, a Japanese fashion trend is a colourful and often gaudy mix of mishmash fashion styles layeredinto one eccentric outfit.
The harajuku fashion trend is very personal, made up of second hand bits and pieces and many other parts
are customised by the wearer to be utterly unique.

    http://www.wikihow.com/Dress-Harajuku-Style

    http://web-japan.org/trends/11_fashion/fas130819.html

We would like you to design an eccentric assassin who dresses in this mad fashion style.
Maybe they have become so renowned that their face is recognised anywhere they go, and with stealth out the window they have created a costume uniform of sorts to play on their reputation.
Maybe they are so confident they can sneak up on someone whilst glowing like a Christmas tree. Or are they just unhinged?

This is an open genre round, so designs could include a steampunk long range sniper, a cyberpunk Yakuza hitman, or even a fantasy rainbow ninja.

    • Male or female human or humanoid ( can be mutant, alien, elf, orc, demon etc.)
    • Assassin (sniper, hitman, ninja, etc)
    • Wears Harajuku fashion
    • Open genre (fantasy, sci fi and anything inbetween!)

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots with final entry.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photos, photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models, rushed works/ rough sketches.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...-up-yet/page24

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

I will be, but I don't know if anyone else is: this thread seems pretty empty. Is this a common occurence?

ByakkoBrush: Nope, this doesn't happen often. Usually there's at least one wip by the end of the first week. Maybe people just don't like this topic...
I'll probably get an entry in, because the insanity of this clothing style is fun

Here's a few ideas, exploring different types of assassins. I was playing around with Clip Studio Paint's symmetrical ruler setting, which made coming up with designs quicker and more fun. I'm also trying to make a character with stylized and exaggerated proportions.

Looks like this thread is starting to pick up.

Nice variations roush. 4, 6, and 8 look the most interesting to me. Wish PS had a live mirror symmetry feature.

This is my first take on this one. Started as a speed paint so I didn't spend too much time in the concept phase. I think I'll add some crazier details (hair clips, belts, maybe some weird sun glasses, grenades etc.)

My initial design process was pretty much making characters until I found one I really liked. The third design was when I really got in the zone and stopped caring about making stuff neat and thinking too much about the brief. Next thing I'm gonna do is mess around with variations and color palletes for this harajuku ninja. Name: lkoko.jpg

Here's a few color schemes. There's different styles to harajuku fashion, but the idea is that you wear whatever you think looks good. So it can be as gaudy as you want.
I started off with the more brightly colored ones, but I'm kind of leaning towards those pastel colors in #5 and #6.

... on second thought, pastel colors are boooring. After messing around with color more, this is the direction I'm going to go with. It's a balance of warm and cool, bright and muted, with clear focal points despite the busy design. Complicated color schemes are fun to make, but they become tiresome quick. I like this scheme a lot. I've also got the basic shadows down, though there's still much to do.

Is a mostly black design in the spirit of this challenge? If not I use the pink one instead.

Something that we should all keep in mind. The shape of the fashions have different design sensibilities from Western "normal" clothes. Mainstream western clothes are slim and tailored. Most Harajuku fashions have a silhouette that is chunky looking, even if it's minimalist or sexy. Google "American street style" or "European Street Style." Then "Harajuku fashion." Notice how body conscious a lot of the western people's clothes look. The images when you google "Harajuku fashion" are baggy, heavily layered, frumpy, or boxy. Even the most scanty dressed people have a lot of body real-estate taken up by clothes, tights, and accessories and the bodies sit more in the background than in western styles. The search results for "Minimalist Harajuku" is mostly not form fitting. "Gyaru" is a sexy Harajuku style and even that's not always very slim fit (my knowledge of Gyaru is limited though).

Nicolewg: Even the really goth influence examples I have seen in searches (I'm no expert by the way) seem to have a largeish area of another colour to contrast with the black, most often it seems a bright red skirt or something. At the moment it looks like just some bits of colour on her stockings and a few flowers in her hair / broaches etc. There are several layers to your design, what if her blouse was a different colour with a black dress etc? Most stereotypical harajuku stuff from what I've seen appears to be a riot of different colours rather than a single one like black or pink. Again I'm only working on what examples I've seen, I'm not pretending to know.

Made a start. Still have a lot more layers to add, going to pad her out with ammo pockets, etc.

Moira There's a few styles that can be worn monochrome. I committed to red accents though, so yeah, I can add more of it.

Re-worked my original concept. Had a lot of fun doing in the background details but I'm not going to be able to finish this one. Another one to add to my CHOW graveyard.
