------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Round #379 Guardian Hell Ant
Topic:
#379 Guardian Hell Ant
Deep in the dungeons of Hell are large guardian ants protecting the palace entrances of the ancient demonic elders. It is up to you to create these hellish creatures. Be sure to study the anatomy of ants so that your creations are as believable as possible!
@Mythmaker - Yes, that means no jewelry, armor, clothing, or anything that is added to the creature but not actually part of it. Exoskeletons are okay because they grow from the creature's body organically and they sometimes protect the body just like armor would.

Hey Lege1! - Those are some really nice studies - look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Bobby - Nice start! - I was watching your sketchbook video yesterday - you really are nifty with a pencil! I keep meaning to do more sketching myself - I do get tired working on the computer so much.
Speaking of which; here's some warm up scribbles! -

Get in here Simon!! Hehe, Bobby, great start to what I believe will be an epic turn of events in the COW. You gonna be a great mod. Holding you to it. Perfect first topic in my humble opinion. My contribution.
Is that THE Bobby Rebholz?!?! Damn dude I've been a big fan ever since I saw you on CGMA's interview with the masters. Well shit, now I HAVE to participate... Really nice ant head sketches by the way.
@Scorge - Great double-feature design. I still have no idea how you design and paint so quickly. I actually like the smaller black ants a LOT. Very sinister. Those antennae are a nice touch too.
Bobby Rebholz: Superb head concepts man! They're all so radical I couldn't say which one out of the 4 that I prefer but I do like something about 3. Either way, rock out man, these are great!
Mythmaker: Thank you so much man, I'm glad you like my studies. I'm hoping they payoff and either way I learned some new stuff doing them. I can draw ants now from imagination pretty successfully, so this is a gain in my artistic arsenal.Liking your roughs a lot, I think I am swaying towards the second one. Just something interesting about it so far.
Si_Swe: Definitely rock at least one concept man! Good to see your name pop up in here.
Scorge: I look at your shyt and hear heavy metal music bro. You are an absolute creature of divine design. Better be careful cause when you leave the Earth you might find yourself designing for the god, gods, or whatever it is.....
Aburnier: Rock a hell ant man!
Here's what I'm working on...times going quick!!! Yikes!!!
Lege1: Work will just have to be understanding! - There are giant demonic hell ants to be painted and that's all there is to it!
I'm definitely seeing progression in the quality of your work anyway; this one is really cool! Your lighting seems more consistent, the image is cleaner, and your ant studies have clearly paid off - looks very intimidating! I think a bit of adjustment to the framing, and a touch more refinement would help lift it further.
Sorry I can't be more help with the feedback, but I'm trying to do CHOW and COW at the same time, and haven't got very far with either!
I feel 'thin'... like butter... spread over too much bread...

I did this guy pretty quick and dirty, since I forgot I was gonna be out in the mountains all weekend and far from my tablet. Hopefully I can come back to it tomorrow night and add some background and actual render the thing in some way. At any rate, there's some gorgeous stuff goin on in this thread. Cheers!
These ants are looking good folks! One thing that can help is showing scale. See if you can indicate a human figure somewhere in these sketches and just as a reminder, Finals for the Guardian Hell Ants need to be in before 10:00PM Eastern Standard Time tomorrow.
