Leffu's sketchbook -- draw, draw and draw; practice, practice and practice.

Hello . I'm Leffu who comes from Hong Kong and I'm 19. I loved drawing since I was small, but I never treat it seriously. Drawing was like an entertainment to me that time and I never learnt it properly. However, I suddenly wanted to draw better last October. I drew almost everyday in the past 5months. Yet, I recognised that my drawing skills rarely improved. So I stopped drawing for a day, and decided to start from the fundamentals. I almost know nothing about colors, values and perspectives. Anatomy is also a big problem for me.

It will be really great if you can give me some advices on how to practice my sense of colors and perspectives. And I really appreciate direct and straight critics. I need a lot of critics and advices, so I decide to post a sketchbook here.

And nice to meet you all!

something I did these few days.
I decided to do the 100 head practice, but I think it will be better if I draw heads with colors.
Yet I don't know anything about colors, so maybe I should go look for color theory and do some color studies. Any good color practice that you recommend?

I've decided to do a 100 heads practice. But I think I should do it with colors.
However, I'm really bad at painting so I guess I should do some color studies before that.
It would be great if you can recommend some ways for me to practice my painting skills!

Hi Leffu! Welcome to the community Looks like you have a lot of great ideas to showcase. Something that could help you along your journey is deciding exactly what you want to do; or even roughly- is it Character Design? Environments? Portraits? Props? Creature Design? Vehicle Design? Narrowing down your focus and honing your skills in one specific area will help you improve faster and see improvement quicker Try to think of it like planting a small seed and watering it each day, if you have several seeds and give them all the water that you could have given the one seed, it won't grow as fast.

Think of what you love doing and what is most important to you, and choose one fundamental (maybe two, if you have time) and focus on studying and applying it to pieces from imagination. For example, since you seem to have a focus in figures you can look into Michael Hampton's book, Figure Drawing: Design and Invention, which focuses on figures. It leads you through gesture, shapes/volumes, landmarks and anatomy at a good pace.

Another thing to decide is whether you are going to focus on line-drawings or painting; one thing at a time. Good painting comes from good drawing skills, if your proportions/shapes are off then good rendering won't save it

Usually, it's; good line-drawings --> good sense of shape & form --> value painting --> color painting. If you need help with sensing form a course by Peter Han called Dynamic Sketching is a great start, it will help you with line-efficiency and such

An idea is if you want to do 100 head-studies, make sure to know beforehand why you are doing it: is it to improve proportions? Is it to practice angles/perspective? Is it to improve line-work? Is it to improve eyes/nose/lips? Is it to improve rendering? Asking yourself these questions beforehand might help you feel like you're studying has more of a purpose, and hopefully improvement ^^

In my opinion, you should focus on getting a good flow in your figures by studying gesture and form and/or if you want to do painting at the same time, you can check out Matt Khor's Ctrl+Paint website, which offers a great start to rendering first in grayscale, then in color If you can learn to shade/paint simple objects first in value (much like the traditional study with a cone&sphere you posted! ) it will help you so much to recognize the plane transitions on human face and how light affects them, in turn making painting much easier. Focusing on grayscale on requires you to think about value, leaving out the saturation and hue aspects of color, making it less confusing

That said, I look forward to seeing you post more awesome stuff and keep rockin' it!

Thank you for such detailed advices! Actually my aim is to draw out my fantasy. That means I need to know how to design characters and environment. Undoubtedly, lineart is important, but painting is also really important as it is one of the key elementa that build a good atmosphere of a picture.
Actually I have many small targets. And you are right that I should use most of the time to practice one aspect before moving on the next. In the past 5 months, I didn't learn efficiently since I didn't have a learning schedule. I just drew random things. Therefore, I really want to set up a efficient learning system. Here are few things I want to practice for now..
    1. Anatomy of different perspectives and angles. I'm working on this now. I have started the 100heads so I can learn how to draw heads from different angles and try to find the way to draw the features properly or even beautifully. And I decide to practice gestures after this 100 head practice.
    2. Values and colors. After these 5 months of drawing, I have realised that painting is important yet not easy, and I know almost nothing about it. I will do some colouring or sketching on some of those 100heads to see if it helps.
3.texture of different material. This can helps me paint a picture better. But I have not yet started thinking about how to practice.
4.landscaped and environment. I didn't start this aspect as well.
5.Still life. Good pictures are not only consisted of people, so I have to learn the skills to draw different things in a realistic way.

Still a long way to go. But I will keep trying to figure out a better way to improve my skills.

And thank you for all your advices and recommendations of books! They really help me. Thank you!!

Yea I agree with Phan Thom-art. This is a great start! If you want to improve quickly, I would suggest watching this video on how to study, https://youtu.be/8kfK46nruKM

I'm quite a master of messing up a sketchbook QUICKLY, hahaha.
I didn't practice systematically, I know. But these few days are quite busy and I'm sick. I really, really don't like being sick.
Hope things will get more easier soon so I can have the right mood and more time to practice.
