    10,000 Hours of Mastery

    Updated 29th June 2017: 261 Hours

    Hi beginner here. I only began taking art seriously in January 2017. No formal art education and I work in a completely different industry. I began tracking my hours from mid January and am currently on 261 hours and aim to do 10 hours per week. Currently treat this as a hobby, no expectations of having a career in concept art but it would be amazing if that happened. Not really sure what direction I want to go in but I really enjoy drawing characters.

    I understand that I have a lot to learn and would really appreciate some feedback on how I can improve. This is the level that I'm currently at:

    I think some of the images in my last post were a little too faint so I hope these are more clear.

    I tend to draw the head too wide/round on portraits in comparison to the reference I'm using, I need to work on this.

    With anatomy I think I need to re-visit Proko's lesson on proportion. I find it especially difficult when the model isn't standing up straight.

    Your general anatomy studies look good, but your faces are still terribly disproportionate. Practice drawing some skulls, if you can see what's underneath the skin you will be able to arrange the features on your faces more realistically. I see some improvement in your latest post with faces, and that you drew the proportion guide but to really learn to draw realistic faces you should combine the proportion guides with knowledge of bone structure.
    Overall, good work so far, keep on practicing!

    Do you have a website for good reference images for skulls? Or did you use a skull model?

    I've come up with a list of basic skills I need to work on the most and each drawing session I will pick one to concentrate on.

    Gesture:
    - Proportions
    - More curved lines rather than using straight lines
    - Exaggeration

    Portraits:
    - Practice drawing the head at different angles. Have just ordered Andrew Loomis Head and Hands book so will work my way through this.

    Fundamentals:
    - Perspective
    - 3D construction
    - Measuring proportions

    good that you are studying the fundamentals-maybe try to do more simple 2d observational still life to add to the construction type studies.

    Finally got around to doing some still life, trying to concentrate on shape, proportion and value. Not interested in the detail at the moment. Can see some shading errors and the top banana should be sitting higher, but overall quite happy with this attempt. Definitely need to practice this more often, hopefully will get the chance to do a still life every day.

    you may be beginner but you are studying the right stuff and i see potential and the ability to understand what you re studying in your drawings. you seem to also have the right attitude so i have to say keep up the good work man

    its good that youre familiarising with all these concepts from early on, but my advice would be focus on simple construction. for me the no1 things you have to get a very good grip of, is perspective and volume of form. if you re comfortable seeing simple 3d forms in your mind and arranging them with correct perspective on paper with their volumes clearly communicated, everything else is just memorizing different types of forms and their relationships. this is the basis for everything. drawabox gives you a good idea of these things to start with but, with perspective specifically you need to really work it out in your mind and understand it. even invent your own methods and concepts of thinking about it in a way that youll eventually wont need to think about it at all.

    so i wouldnt stress too much with manequinisation or loomis yet. since your perspective and form understanding abilities have room for improvement, studying construction of the human body is not the easiest or fastest way to improve. dont detach completely though, its good to practice many things but just keep in mind your main focus and be methodical and honest of what you need to study. definately keep up 30s gesture drawings, do them every day and dont think about construction too much. seeing rhythms is very very important skill its what connects all your abilities and makes them work together, without it they suck. and remember never copy anything without understanding it. if you find yourself just copying something, it means you have to go back and study that thing. whether you re just copying shapes without thinking about the form or copying angles and measurements without understanding the perspective, when you finish copying you ll have learned nothing new no matter how well you copied. you need to study hard but that doesnt necessarily mean hard studies. doing master studies all day for example without knowing how to draw a cube will only make you good copier. thats what photos are for know what you re studying and what you re learning everytime good luck with your artistic journey man and have fun! and sry for long post its just my opinion
