    C.H.O.W 420 Urban Samurai

    C.H.O.W 420 Urban Samurai

    Character of the Week #420
    Urban Samurai
    Deadline - Sunday, February 12th 10PM GMT

In the near future vast dystopian cities cover the planet. The rich inevitably lived in clean, secure districts, whilst the poor are left to the sprawling, overcrowded ghettos where there is no law enforcement and criminal empires rule. Constant gang wars and terrible living conditions mean resident’s life expectancies are exceptionally low. Worst is the pollution, pumped down from the affluent areas making ghetto’s atmosphere exceptionally flammable. Guns are banned in the ghetto, as a single spark could set off a chain reaction in the air and instantly flash fry everyone for miles. This has meant a strange backwards trend for swords and bows to be the preferred weapons of choice.

However the code of the samurai is spreading through the demoralized masses, where many have taken up the sword to defend the helpless from the gang violence. They’ve lost friends or family to gangs or ex-gang members seeking penance. Some have acquired high-tech weaponry and gear through black markets, while others make do with whatever armaments they can find. It’s not the latest tech, but it’s plenty effective.

    - Male or Female, human
    - Must have samurai sword (katana)
    - Cyberpunk setting
    - Wears urban cyberpunk clothing and armour: inspired by 1990’s hip-hop style and samurai warriors.
    - Try to design clothing that combines urban style with cyberpunk themes.

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots with final entry.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photos, photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models, rushed works/ rough sketches.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...-up-yet/page24

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

Just changed the criteria for this round, please re-familiarise yourself with the brief. Sorry for any confusion to early birds reading the thread.

Ok I got a question. My mate wants to put his artwork in but he doesn't want to make an account, could I upload it for him as well as my design?

AdamRoush: Really like how the hoodie shape is incorporated into 1, 2, 5, and 12! I think those make the most sense for the prompt but the flowing garments in 3 are soo nice. They give them a sort of grand regal appearance. 6 is striking mostly because it shows the actual danger of being a samurai (I assume those are holograms and he's lost both of his real arms in a fight, or am I reading too much into that one?).

I think I'll be taking a lot of inspiration from Sengoku Basara and Samurai Warriors If you've never played those games, they're (loosely) based on the Warring States era of Japanese history, so the playable characters are like exaggerated versions of historical figures. Whole lotta fun and ridiculous costumes!

More characters over here if anyone's curious.

    Sengoku Basara
    Samurai Warriors 3 | Samurai Warriors 4

Also thinking about drawing inspiration from Samurai Champloo since it has some stuff in common with this prompt. Samurai Jack also comes to mind... too many things to choose from...

Every samurai needs a good kabuto, so starting with some head designs first.

After a few sketches I think this is the rough I want to keep working on.
I wanted to give him the fearsome Oni masked Samurai helmet but with some cyber flavor. I already see somethings I want to eliminate but this is a start..

    Fun topic!
I got a bit caught in the idea that both samurai and hip-hoppers often tend to wear loosely fitted clothes.
Tried to make a sketch to explore this similarities a bit.

Playing with silhouettes, I kinda like this one although I'm not sure the cross-handed grip reads the way I want. I see her standing in front of a big illuminated billboard.

Just posted some crits on the POST-APOCALYPTIC WICKED WITCH for anyone who is interested.

Bombskillu: Joining the site is reall a prerequisite for participation. It's free to do and they can always delete their account if they want.
Karmann Marco: It's a good cyber samurai, but not too much of a hip hop vibe yet.
not Joaquin: Seems Wu Tang clan and Nike are still going strong even in a dystopian ghetto! The arm without the sword looks a little twisted and uncomfortable bending forward from the shoulder like that.

Really cool sketches by everyone! Awesome.

Not quite as much time for drawing today as I would have wished for...
Tried to work a little bit on the cyberpunkiness by adding some glasses and stuff, and removing the glossy look from the clothing, and adding some shoulder pads to the armor.

Julius Fox was raised by his sword-master uncle and learned the ways of the sword after his parents were killed in a gang-related incident. Now that he has become a sword-master himself, he skates up and down the ghetto whistling "A hunting we will go" as he looks for gangsters to dispatch from this world. The song can be heard from blocks away thanks to a custom-made gas mask that he must wear because of the polluted atmosphere. In his free time, he loves to play dominoes and carries a custom set in a pouch on his back. There is a rumor that his dominoes are carved from the bones of his enemies.

I wanted Julius to look young, thin and agile. To achieve this I used an elongated rectangle for the body shape and an inverted, rounded triagle for the head to help him look a little dangerous. I repeated this rounded triangle shape in the armor as well to help visually unify the character. I decided to maintain some of the details of the samurai armor and add some details that will be cyberpunk glowy-bits; I feel this gives it a great balance of the old vs new. The overalls, rollerblades, and hairstyle are distinctly 90s but I added samurai patterns and cyberpunk details to those elements to help visually unify the clothing with the armor. The undershirt is purely cyberpunk inspired. I have chosen a 90s color scheme that I will show off with my next post.

Had to go through a couple of poses for this one but finally set into something I liked. Don't usually- if ever draw mechanic stuff so this was interesting so far.
