    Skillfully stumbling through space

Hello everyone, my name is James. I'm starting a sketchbook on here for constructive feedback on my drawings. I started learning how to draw on my own after I graduated high school back in 2010. Drawing right now is more of a hobby for me than anything. However I may decide to go into graphic design, or some other art field if I don't think computer programing is a fit for me. Any feedback is appreciated.

I seem to have a issue uploading images. I'll upload some drawings after I troubleshoot for a bit.

Alright I'm finally getting things sorted out. This is my best drawing of last year. I spent around 7 hours on it over two days.

Here are a few more of my drawings. I really like the shading on the mech, but I need to learn how to render different materials.

Here are more drawings from 2016. I drew these over 8, or 9 days. The last drawing is just a bigger version of the day 7 drawing. It took me around 5 hours to complete.

Here are some more drawings from last year. The pumpkin may have been drawn back in 2015... I don't really remember. I'll scan some more recent stuff later this week.

The nine floating robots in robes were drawn in 2015, but all the other drawings in this post are from late last year... around October. My figure drawings could really use some work.

Here are my figure drawing pages from this year. It's been a while since I've studied figure drawing, and most of these pages are like a memory dump. Except for the hands... I've been doing my best to draw one hand a day from reference. My figure drawing skills have gotten a little rusty, but I wasn't very good to start with. Hopefully I'll improve throughout the year.

Todays figure drawing practice. My first timed gesture drawings of the year. ~1min each, and I felt very rushed while doing them. I tried to start with the line of action for each pose. Then it went torso -> head/neck -> legs -> and finally arms. The drawings on the second page were not timed. I just analyzed a random pose, and was trying out a different way to start a torso.

Nice figure studies! I like how you're conveying the volume and construction of the figures. I'd suggest trying to exaggerate the gesture in your figure drawings since they look a little stiff. Here's a video that can help you on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y

Anyways, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the link to Proko's video. I watched it, and I've been trying to push my gestures a little more. I probably will only be able to upload my drawings once a week. Here is some of my new stuff.

Here is some hand drawings from the last week or so. Along with a failed attempt at a gauntlet. The day after I drew it I realized the fingers were way too narrow.

Here is some more of my recent figure drawing practice. Oddly enough it seems easier to work from imagination than from reference for figure drawing.

My first long drawing of the year. I put around 10 hours into it. I'm happy with it, but it is not perfect by any means.

Hand, and figure drawing dump. All of the hands on the first two pages were drawn using reference. I also used reference for part of the figure drawing studies.

Here are a couple of pages out of my toned sketchbook. I've wanted to play around with using my pen for linework, and pencil with a white gel pen for shading. I'm not sure if I'm happy about the contrast between light, and dark.

First page of hands was drawn from reference. The rest of the figure/anatomy drawings were done without reference.

Another page of hands drawn from reference, and two more drawings for March of the Robots. I'm not happy with the robot drawings, but I only spent an hour on each.

Are you working from a particular anatomy book/tutorial? They are looking really good.

A lot of the anatomy stuff I've drawn recently has been from memory, and because of that I've noticed a few gaps in my knowledge. However to answer your question. A few years back I did study figure drawing from the books Figure Drawing Design and Invention, and Dynamic Figure Drawing. Around that time I also studied anatomy from the books Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist, and Classic Human Anatomy.
