    Fusion Powered Horse Drone
    Deadline: Sunday, January 8, 2017

When designing this, think about why it exists. What is its purpose? What does it do and how does it do it? Don't just draw a cyborg horse with some kind of a metal thing sticking out of its head or prosthetic legs. This must be a machine for IDW.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw a Fusion Powered Horse Drone.
    2. That's it... now draw!

Odd that I checked into the forum tonight for the first time since going to tromp across Co. Kerry back in September. I read the topic and thought "Gee, that sounds like a fun brief."

Then I did one of those cartoon double-takes and though "Hey, wait a second..."

Welcome back. It's a good idea. I just hope people can resist the temptation to turn it into a creature instead of a machine.

This was the quick sketch I did at work last year (on a Post-It note, what would we do without them?) when thinking about the idea of a horse-drone. As you can see, it's a "cyborg horse with something sticking out of its head," which I probably would have gone with if not for your admonition to think past that sort of thing.

I went to a workshop years ago with Jan Adkins, the illustration editor for National Geographic magazine, and one thing I remember from it was his advice to "never play the top card." The first concept you come up with is going to be the first concept everybody else comes up with, so keep digging till you hit something original.

This is proving harder than I thought. Haven't really progressed much past the cyborg horse, but it's a little more imaginative than it was in the Post-It stage...

It reads to me like a horse-like machine, and therefore fully appropriate for IDW. The blades serve to give the impression this thing can move at high speed. As you firm it up, maybe the sensor array is an area where you can add some more imaginative flourishes. I don't see a tail. Is that maybe where the antenna is? Does this drone transmit anything?

Guess I'm back to my Alembic2 alter-ego, as the system isn't letting me in under my original username.

Anyway, I actually had a small dish antenna on the back of its head pointing up and to the rear, but it made it look like something off The Jetsons so I painted over it. My original idea was for a remote drone to explore and gather information on a giant prairie planet, so it'll have to transmit data somehow... I'll keep working on it and see what I come up with.

Having tried various tail ideas - none of which added much to the concept - I realized that a horse mostly uses its tail to swat flies. So I'm thinking of simply leaving it out. And looking at the whole antenna issue brought to mind the fact that my first cell phone fifteen years ago had a ridiculous 2" antenna sticking out of it, while current technology has completely eliminated the need for an external "mast." So maybe the little array on this thing's back (inspired by the Soviet-era "Odd Rod" antennas on the MiG-23) is capable of exo-atmospheric communication.

Nice sketch! I like the retro-feel to it, I'm getting a sort of brass & ivory vibe.
