    Free kittens!

Ok I lied, no kittens. It's mostly poses, portraits and screenshot studies. x:

I more or less quit drawing 4 years ago and I'm getting back into it.
It was a bit overwhelming since I didn't really know where to get started again, so I did some masterstudies.
I spend probably 10 hours or so on the Bouguereau until I decided to drop it. I just figured I had so many issues with proportion, color, anatomy - everything really - that it would be better to do some studies. And everything!

The rest of the color studies are all at most an hour.

Some of the portrait and gesture practice I did this month.
The heads are either referenced from pics/mirror. Or from mind and then I tried to sketch in the skulls/muscles into some of them with the aid of anatomy books and my cast skull. Or the other way around.

And some forearms, again drawing my own arms and then trying to figure out with mostly Bridgman and Loomis what the hell I'm looking at. o.o

That makes at least one kitten.

And I'm really trying to wrap my head around.... heads.

So ok, bit of a dump of the last month.
I'm quite excited to get back into CA, glad this place is still around.

Edit: hey tiger. I briefly forgot how the internet works and had to move my first post to my second post so that the thumbnails show up. This is the exact same thing that happened the first time I made a sketchbook. I hope it works now.

I'm just getting back into art too after a long hiatus, and yes, it can be so overwhelming, especially jumping back into it and relearning that you have more weaknesses than you remember (in my case, I mean). I love the master studies and your color choices for the portraits are great. Keep going, hope to see more art from you.

Great studies! One suggestion: when drawing, stop scribbling!

marimari: Yeah, let's do this. °__°

glitchi: So very much. I guess it's use it or loose it. Or well, probably not entirely lost but I frequently run into anatomical and proportional issues that I don't remember being so severe. Maybe they were. xD Maybe my memory is just fooling me.

But I hope that some stuff is just stored away in long term memory and needs some dusting off...

eezacque: Yeah, very undisciplined lines there. I need to slow down.

So for now I'm working my way through anatomy practice and some quick color studies.

Sorry about the picture quality. My scanner produces even worse results and so for now I'm taking fotos of my sketches. I think I'll just get a really bright lamp. x:

I had one but it was pre CA.org - Apocalypse of Vanishing Pictures Doom. I stopped posting in 2009 I think.

Oh look! Now I have exactly about 500 posts.

I see. The last thing i heard from the vanished pictures issue is that retrieving them has a high priority, that was about a decade ago.

    Legs, legs, legs. o.o

Not much time to draw this week. :I However, I feel like some things are falling into place. Proportions are getting a bit better.

Ok, some faces I actually liked.

I had such problems drawing the keys on my keyboard. >.< Perspective my old foe, we meet again. Making a straight line is also no piece of cake. I did some excercises from http://drawabox.com/lesson/1 on some used paper with stuff on it, so I'm not going to post that. It's just more or less wobbly lines anyway. ö.ö
And I've been setting up different objects and lighting situations.

What confuses me when working with pencil is the proportions of the values I put down. I mean, I guess it's ok to just choose a value for lights, darks and midtones. But then there's local color and that can be so much darker in light areas than some shadowy parts and I'm really having trouble with this. Maybe I'm just overthinking. Maybe I just need to figure out a proper midtone to lay in at the beginning and that's it.

Those twisted forms for example are actually really black at the tip (it's some sheep horn) but when I make those black I kind of have to adjust the rest for it's local color. I mean, on some objects it works quite well to just leave the lights paper white and then on others, which are already dark, it's just too big of a value range to look convincing.
This might sound retarded but it's the chaos going on in my head when I draw. q_Q

I'll have another go at these tutorials. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q-L...3rLZWqScFTRhtv <.<

Edit: Ohhh the youtube is a great place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dqGkHWC5IU This video answered my questions at around 9:00 . Reflectiveness of the material is key to determining the strength of the highlight, while the rest of the values do indeed get compressed on a darker local color. Thank you internet.
    DSG from today, Gloom Slinger.
How do I construct/determine cast shadows? x: This is a bit of a mess.
Also, I pasted the gun in and painted over it. There's going to be a day I learn how to draw a gun, but it's not today.
Some messed up anatomy. :/ I also don't know how to draw arms but that I am going to work on today.

Lovely work, and good work with all the anatomy studies! I think what might help is to draw bigger, and to make sure you are drawing from the shoulder , might make your lines more dynamic Keep it coming!

Your colours look amazing, and good work on your studies! And I agree with Kimonas, drawing bigger would benefit you a lot (:

Thanks guys. Those are actually a3 pages, so it's not as tiny as it might seem. But I do tend to cram the pages and get smaller as it fills up. My wrist would thank me for more shoulder action. x)
