    Alicia's Sketchbook

After lurking around Conceptart since high school but never actually joining, I've finally made an account! This is my first post, so I hope I don't screw it up. Anyway, quick background info, since I'm a fan of context - I'm 25 and have been doing art since I could dip my grody toddler fingers into paint and smear them onto paper. I wanted to be an animator until AP Art Studio in high school crushed my motivation and work ethic. More likely, I guess I just burnt myself out. I didn't take any art classes after that but I continued drawing for fun, and at this point I don't really have much of an artistic 'career' besides occasional freelancing for random commissions and skateboard graphics. I love what I do for a living, but between now and the end of my twenties, I would really like to improve a shit-ton and be able to more efficiently support myself solely through art, maybe through illustration and/or animation. I believe that's a realistic goal if I focus more and work extremely hard - so joining this forum is kind of my first step into getting involved in some kind of artistic community. This place is obviously full of insanely skilled artists, and I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.

My sketchbook here will consist of a lot of random stuff... I do a lot of work in colored pencil, but I also love digital art, woodburning, oil pastel, and markers. I get bored easily, so I jump around mediums a lot... which probably isn't entirely a good thing, but whatever. Also, I don't have a scanner, so everything I post is taken with a phone. Tear me to pieces! I'm here to get better.

    Alicia's Sketchbook

This guy's a WIP, as he still needs some kind of background. I was originally going to just halfass something easy, but I was talked out of it. Either way, he was kind of a light source study to practice underlighting without a reference. Now I know that I need to practice more underlighting WITH references.

Ugh, I'm not sure if I'm doing image attachment right. It turned out small and then it has the image posted additionally under "attached images?" Well, hopefully this post is better... here's a variety of sketches, some really recent, and some up to a year and a half-ish old.

Lurking and drawing productivity levels for today were quite acceptable... thanks to CA, I learned about a few awesome reference sites that I had no idea existed. Below are a couple figure drawings referenced from posemaniacs, and some expressions and hand studies from artists.pixelovely.com. If y'all have any other favorite websites like this, please share them! Also, yes, the first figure's chest is totally asymmetrical... which I didn't realize until just now. Maybe her left shoulder pulling back would actually make it look kinda like that, buuuuut... *shrug*

Below are a couple of figures from tonight. I really need to start doing gestures again, but I have a lot of fun rendering things in more detail. Working on shaking off the rust in regards to human anatomy in general, though.

The final draft for the sketch below is going to be a custom graphic for my friend's pro-model downhill skateboard. The concept was his idea - fucking metal!! It's just gonna be a single-color screenprint.

The owl is obviously a WIP, and has been for a while... need to just finish him already, really.

    Name: greathornedowl2.jpg
Views: 855
Size: 202.6 KB

This was another skateboard graphic from a few years ago that only ended up being used for a sticker, because their prospects for getting a sublimation printer didn't come to fruition. The background gradient was just a stand in, it was going to be a color stain over the woodgrain.

The lines for the graphic below were TRACED over a photo I took of my girlfriend being a badass! The whole piece was an experiment.

Now that I've dumped some older stuff here, lots of new things are coming soon! Thanks for looking.

I haven't done gestures in six years, but after spending even just a couple days at this forum, I've realized the necessity of them. Soooo here we go... gonna make them an everyday thing from here on out. It was a little weird getting back into the swing of them, but I'm looking forward to getting better.

Nice, You have patience and you doing nice job with your sketches. I believe you could experiment more with straight lines and corners, because you using almost only curvy, round lines.

@biglebowsky: Thank you for the feedback. I'll be conscious about incorporating more straight lines and angles into my drawings today.

Man your sketching ethic is really good! Nice to meet other people roughly the same age! And you're already pretty good where you are. Lots of patience and tenacity and you finish what you start, something that lacks with many people. Some crit: I think you could use thinner lines and work a bit on line weights. Also learn where to put extra weight and where not to. Don't forget curves, you can taper your line weights as they tuck under forms.

So I don't have internet at home, which makes uploading things here and being active a real ordeal... so sorry for the lack of presence. Here are some sketches I've done recently, and there's more to be uploaded as well!

Hey, thanks a ton for the feedback, Crankshaft! It's encouraging to hear that you think I'm good at finishing what I start, because I always feel like I don't finish enough stuff. Definitely going to start experimenting with changing up my lines, so I'll think about all of those points while sketching. Thanks again!
