But yeah, I'm looking forward to your next installment. Glad to hear you're using refs now and playing with foreground elements - I'm jealous, there's been some outstanding advice in this thread so far!

I feel retarded repeating stuff I literally said to you 2 seconds ago, but I think this is definately one of your strongest enviro's yet.

That said, I have a couple of crits.

Pay more attention to your brush/stroke direction. Especially in the water on this piece, the strokes are very chaotic, and as such, really break the illusion of the water. Think of water as a glassy, mirrored surface first, and then, if you want obstructions, think about the ripple patterns...in general, water distorts in ripples, concentric rings, parallel lines, so your distortions should general follow the same stroke direction when painting impressionistically. (Obviously high turbulence will break this theory but...) It's hard to read the water here as a flat surface, even if you want it distorted and not glassy.

The next thing I noticed is that the large log that the figures are crossing stops the action of the trees and hurts the perception of space. Ron was just talking to me about this last night, which is probably the only reason I recognized it. But your background trees lead up to the log and then stop...they don't continue through it and out the other end. Obviously this is what you would see in this instance, but in thinking about compositions in the future, pay attention to stuff like that as having background objects end while obscured by foreground objects hurts the sense of depth perception.

And lastly, the reflections of said background trees in the water also start at the log...it might help (without having to redraw anything) to carry those reflections through the log, as they are farther away and the reflections should start right at the edge of the water, and not halfway through.

    Keep it up!

that's indeed one of the strongest enviros from you yet.
i'm not as nitpicky as fuki though, except perhaps for that thing about the log.
oh and that fish totally doesn't fit in.

Thank you, Ben. Thank you so much for making this one... and for including the catfish. And uh, thanks for putting up with my crits, though they weren't half as eloquent as the one Fuki just left...

I still think your green on the log is too intense and competing with the foreground leaves on the right, but I know I'm not gonna win that argument with you

Good one! Maybe I'm just noticing it now that you've stepped away from the rock environments, but you've really made a huge improvement.

The biggest problem is the reflection on the water's surface. Fuki pointed out some of the problems, but it has a few more. For one, none of the banks seem to be reflecting in the water. Also, the reflection of the log seems to be laying right on the water's surface; however, if you were to measure the distance between the log and its reflection, the surface of the water should actually be the halfway point. If an object is 3 feet above the reflecting surface, its reflection should be 3 feet below it.

Despite the water and reflection issues, it's the best environment yet by far. I like the area around the far side of the log, it's got a lot of warms and cools playing off each other nicely.

oh MAN that is so PIIIIMP!

I love the colors and the trees...a nd....

only crit is that everything flows into itself too much, it's really hard to pick out individual pieces, like the rocks and the tree roots, and the ferns and the leaves on the bank. just my two cents.

Congrats on your 100th post Rookie

So. Um... I've already chewed you out about your lineweights and the virtues of the brush tool... and I'd like to see your eyes more abstractes shapes as opposed to circle templates. You look like you're gonna eat my unborn children... or that you just stepped in something wet and slimy.

Tchia. Less is more. Maybe take another pass at this same photo using varied lines, break your contour lines in some places even.

I also pointed to towards Vilppu for them thar gestures... so what more can I say?

    How's the collab goin?

Agreed Ben... I mean, it's not like anyone spammed you a bunch of gorgeous reference pics of rock faces, swamps and cliffs or anything...

Some pointers about your figures... don't hide them in big padded suits (yes yes, I know this was a character design and he needed this uniform). You have to get 'em naked! So slap a warning on your thread and show me some nudity!

so uhh, kids wanna hear a funny story. I just failed High school. And this is where the funny part comes in, get this: i failed highschool, because of a really low grade in one subject right.Yea that one subject, it was ART of all things. My appalling failing art grade, caused me to fail highschool.
    Funny huh.

    1. make a book out of those popkes.
    2. you're still in high school? definitely didn't know that! I feel lame cos' it means that you're way ahead of me still.
    3. your character pencils are excellent, but your paints could use some work. Paint over one of your pencils sometime.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude, Ben. What in the FUCK man? First Lung Bug, now you? I thought Europe was supposed to be some art fucking mecca? Anyone with two eyes (and most people with one!) can see your art kicks ass. And now some no talent ass clown comes along and says <snobby british voice> "Hmm. No, no, that just won't do."</snobby british voice> For fucks sake man, that's just un-fucking-believable. And then to fail high school because of that, man..that's just adding insult to injury.

I hope there's some sort of appeals process and that you get this shit straightened out, cause that's just too messed up.

You've heard my thoughts on that hon, as well as my roomie's. Take it one day at a time and try for your appeal. I'm positive you can work this out... and hell, if you need people to vouch for your level of committment, you have a whole forum full of talented folks (and their cheeky sass!) to back you up.

Oh man, that's pretty shitty. In the long run the grade isn't a big deal, but I assume not graduating could screw with getting into an art school right away (assuming that's what your plans are). Good luck with the inquiry!

Actually, I failed Art in high school too. High School Art class was a joke. Mine were never graded on any sort of quality, solely on quantity. You hand in however many pieces and you automatically pass, any less and you fail. Like a month after I failed I ended up grabbing a piece of printer paper, spending a couple minutes smearing some watercolours on it and giving it to my teacher and he changed my grade to a pass.

    Give 'em hell!
