CHOW #400 :: Emperor of the Taghali Forest

    Character of the Week #400
    Emperor of the Taghali Forest
    Deadline - Sunday, May 8th 10PM GMT

Within the lush green forests of the Taghali Empire, the ruler reigns over the people within the forest. With their rule, they have brought peace and prosperity to the empire and its people. Most people love the Emperor but there are those who wish to dethrone him for they believe that their freedom has been stripped away.

    • Can be male or female
    • Must be elven.
    • Has a mohawk for a hair style
    • Green is the most common color within their wardrobe.
    • genre is fantasy

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline is stated as CLOSED.
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up). No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please and no multiple submissions.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll. Character MUST be readable (A 3D modeler must be able to model the character by looking at your image). Polished line-art is acceptable.
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work. (See next rule for exception)
    • 3D is permitted and renders MAY be used as whole or in part of a painting, as long as YOU created the work. If 3D was used in your piece, then you must also submit a SCREENSHOT of the asset in the 3D program you used. Pre-made and/or purchased, online, assets are forbidden.
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread.
    • Design your character for the brief, not for your personal fetish. Keep the designs practical. Nude figures with no design elements will not be accepted as a design.
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

So, I was thinking about trying this out, though I have a few questions:

Are there more information on the Taghali people, or should we make that up by ourselves? And the emperor, what kind of ruler is he? Is he pretending to be good, while having his own agendas? Is he ruling with terror and fear? With the elves, is it the standard Tolkien elves or is that up to us? And are there multiple races located within the empire? What kind of empire are we talking about anyways? Is the forest just really big or is it just where the emperor is located?

I don't know, I feel like there are alot of things unanswered. So, I'm not sure if we should just make that up on our own, or if I'm missing something.

    And one more thing:
I don't know if we should put the character in a scene or just have him in a blank backround?

Frustraty: A vague description like this gives you more freedom to make your own decisions about this character and their universe. Who they are and how their kingdom is set up is totally up to you. The idea is just to see what you come up with for this theme. If you want him to be a Tolkien-style evil elven overlord, go for it.

Also, a good rule of thumb for the background is to keep it simple, making sure that the focus is on the character's design.

Would something like this be acceptable as a mohawk?

Moirae, as long as we can tell that both sides of the head are shaved, the mohawk doesnt need to be standing up on end.

    Frustraty: Exactly what Adam said.

The character doesn't have much that makes it stick out from the guards in the background; if you have other people there, I think you should make sure the empress seem far more important. As it is, it's more of a "captain of the guard" type character, which is also somewhat reinforced due to the composition of her seemingly blocking a door together with the other two while wearing the same clothes and using a similar weapon.
I also think that her face is more imposing in the WIP due to being slightly upturned and directed towards the viewer, creating the image of an important person looking down on you.

    Cool Topic
Quick question, no Genre was indicated so would it be safe to do a Sci-Fi themed design or does it need to be Fantasy based?

It is meant to be fantasy, so I'll put that in the requirements.

The mohawk thing confuses my brain so much. Why would an emperor have a freaking mohawk, and how do I add that while still having him look like he brings peace and prosperity to a whole empire. Name: _crytard__by_noodi10.png

I tried to make the shape Art Nouveau-esk, because the elves live in the forest and probably have a thing for nature. It just doesn't work out with the freaking mohawk. CHOW #400 :: Emperor of the Taghali Forest

    Designing is definitely a bitch.

A mohawk basicly represents the opposite of order and reason. How do I make it look so it does....

"Most people love the Emperor but there are those who wish to dethrone him for they believe that their freedom has been stripped away."

From the description it sounds like not everybody is fond of the emperor and that the Forest is not exactly heaven on earth, so to speak. We may be talking about a ruthless dictator here rather than a Jesus, so even though a mohawk may be seen as a sign of rebellion it can be also seen as a sign of extremism.

Hey Frustraty, I think you're over analyzing this too much. Just design around the specifics of the theme and make up the rest. Why does he have a mohawk? Maybe he's a chaotic emperor, who has brought about peace by killing all his foes, but has a calm facade. You don't really need to justify the hairstyle.

Think about silhouette and what would make an awesome looking character. Think about color theory, and what colors represent order, calm, or peace, like white, light gray, pale yellows and pale blues. Make sure to add some green though, which could be done by thinking about his domain. It could be all pine trees, it could be the rainforest, they could be in the mountains, or in the swamps, or wherever you think would add some details to make the design more interesting.

When you're sketching out ideas, if you're unsure of something, or want another set of eyes on your work/idea, post it up and ask for critique.

Personally I think of this character as a warrior emperor, one who's not afraid to get his hands dirty. He'd fight on the front lines if he had to.
