Frustraty, you are making it far more complicated than it needs to be, like what Adam is saying. These are simply requirements that you need to include in your design. Everything else, is pretty much from your imagination. Also, you should try googling different mohawk styles. A mohawk isnt just your punk rock style hairdo. There are a bunch that range from short hair to long hair, to braided to spiked. You are limiting yourself by trying to consider too many "what ifs".

Google is your friend if you use it right.

@NoShot - I like the non-traditional ears and the pose.

@Al3x - Really nice line work. I think the values helped make the character stand out alot better. A little strategic color work and I dont think there will be any problem making her stand out as the leader.

@edgarej - The color scheme in the middle really pops, but I think overall the pose and lighting on the bottom left works the best.

@Frustraty - Adam and Havok have given some great advice already. I would say just get your pencil moving. Do some thumbnails to get the juices flowing to help you feel out the character and post your progress. People are happy to help.

I think I'm going to go with a dark elf. I want to keep the scene dark and use the red hair to focus the attention. I did some quick z-sphere sketching because I was playing around with the idea of having him seated on a scorpion throne with his subject below him but I'm not sure if it would distract from the emperor himself. Suggestions and crits always welcome.

Been a while since I participated in a ChoW. Thought I'd try at this one. Must admit, I've been struggling too. My idea is also that of a warrior-like emperor, one who perhaps the calm elves value but might grate against their societies view of tranquility and beauty. Mixing rough and sleek ideals together has been straining. So I've been looking a lot at Drow and the Sylvari from GW2.

    Anyway, initial sketches:

Noshot - I love it so far

Stephen - what's with the character on the right?

    Al3x - looking good

Oleg - awesome sketch so far, not too sure about the lady on the right

Bilakong - awesome sketch, skin tone needs some work

Discorave - I wished I could sketched like you... word of caution though, chow needs to have at least 3/4ths of the body showing

kyllswitch - scorpion throne might be backgroun overkill, but then mine looks like it might have a detailed background too so proceed as is, lol

    tchuk - awesome thumbnails

justin - check proportions, unless going for stylized look

raganosis - are those color pencils? cause I'm jelly... looking good

gillyweeds - i want to see more please...

hurman - i like pose 2, nice chestplate design

anthis - very very cool, though I would suggest to crop out the background and just focus on your guy

my wips so far... I'm sticking with a child emperor, hopefully that's within the scope of the rules...

Have a long weekend, so wanted to make a start on this.
Would like a second pair of eyes on the anatomy of this please. I want to get those legs sorted out before I put the clothes and things on. - Mohawk will be added later too. If it sin't clear she is walking down some steps, probably with a throne behind her.

sulksal - background might be too much

abrazuno - background might be too much also... Just when I decided to get rid of my background, everyone starts doing it lol...

tchuk - great design... the chestplate is sort of confusing though...

moirae - have you tried rotating the figure to a different angle? I could already see that you might have to fight through foreshortening issues with the hand and feet

started from scratch and going for a different approach.... hopefully I finish

Moirae - I feel like the the torso is a bit thick/long when compared to the thickness of the legs, arms, and size of the head. While the proportions could be technically correct, my eye is registering something as a little off. You could probably also thicken the legs and arms a tad while enlarging the head just a bit.

Al3x - Looks good. Might want to watch the angle of the feet, or at least define where they connect to the legs a bit more.

Billakong - A little color in the skin would help unify the piece a bit more. It's a very stark contrast.

Discorave - loving it, just beware the CHOW rules.

Mudbreath - Cool! Just watch his head. Feels a bit small.

Justinchambersart - Welcome! Watch the way her right arm behaves. It's off. Check the pose in the mirror if you need to.

Raganosis - Looking cool, but beware the CHOW rules in regards to how much of the character is shown.

    Abrazuno - Looks nice!

    Tchuk - Sweet!

edgarej - Feels very classical. Even if he's a child, watch the head size. Just a tad smaller might be good.

I know the background might be a bit much, but one of my weaknesses is placing characters in a setting, which is why I want to practice it. I'll work on it.

    @Moirae

Yes, her legs does kind of feel skinny, specifically the muscles on the lower right leg (whatever those muscles are called). It feels like it needs to bulge out more... Looking good though....

I think I'm close to calling this finished... I want mine kind of loose and I feel like I might overdo detailing (a bad habit I have) and kill the looseness of it. What do you all think?

Ok, still have to figure out about the wear. She definitely get some kind of shiny armor too....
The legs aren´t look correct yet.

@edgarej: Thanks you! I like the costume a lot! The facial expression is a bit off for an emperor... for me it shows not enough confidence!

@Moirae: Legs look alright to me!

I don't know what to change the expression to, but you did make me realize that the head is still too big and that the neck is off, so thanks for making me pay attention to that again. Looking good on the colors.

Xaya: That head is super tight! I can't work that way, I have to leave the rendering the head until last, I think because the head is a major focal point and I get lazy if it is finished and start messing up things in the rest of the pic like drawing hands back to front. Yours has a lot of potential I think.

Moirae: You picked a hard pose, but I think the legs aren't too skinny.

    I started to paint mine
