I believe conceptual art gives credence to the creative process and ideation in and of itself, and is more significant than people would like to think. If art was merely representational it wouldn't exist.

I think you're right about Peterson's argument, but it's a very simplified version.
Now, to be fair, I don't think there is as strong a correlation between trees growing and people wanting to express themselves as you suggest. Trees grow because of the nutrients they take in. It's difficult to think of basic evolutionary principles that dictate why we MUST express ourselves. Expression is a choice, not a fact of life.

Darwin's theory of sexual selection explains it just fine. If you just hang around in a darkened apartment rocking back and forth in a fetal position you are never going to get laid. You need to get out there and put on some sort of a display.

If you have technique but no ideas, it's craft. If you have ideas but no technique, it's conceptual. If you have both, it's art.

I think this is a great point. However, there are different tiers of expression. There could be expression that attracts the opposite sex and their could also be expression that is just flamboyantly artsy. Saying that we must express ourselves through art is a bit extreme. Express ourselves, yes, but not necessarily through art.
