    Le Sketch

    Hello All,

Largely self-taught artist here trying to learn Photoshop. I'm fairly comfortable with traditional mediums but need to get my digital game together. I'm interested in working as a illustrator for 2D art. This is my second time posting a sketchbook and I assume the last thread was erased for inactivity. Guess that means I have to post more often!

    Comments and Critique are welcome.!

This 1st image is charcoal and pencil anatomy study from an art class earlier this year. I decided to finish it off. I might move it to Photoshop to correct some issues and use it as a digital piece.

Here's a bunch of stuff from the last time I started a thread. Since then and now I've mainly done loose 60 sec gestures on Quickposes.com. I'll start updating some of that stuff as well.

Some gesture sketches for a superhero illustration I plan to start this week. Sorry for the clutter. I write all over the place.

Here's a study of Sargent's "Miss Elsie Palmer". Took hours this time due to learning Photoshop. Will try to be quicker next time.

Here's a an attempt at drawing a person in color. The head and shoulder need help but I don't want to put too much effort into practice pieces. Gonna try going from grayscale to color next time for speed and ease. Two steps included.

I also attached gesture practice from Quickposes.com. I stuck to simple figures due to unfamiliarity with Photoshop. Can't wait until this program isn't a crutch.

I would recommend you to create key shortcuts on photoshop to help you familiarize your work flow on there, anyways keep the good work. Can't wait for a next post from you!

    Hi hi!

First of all, great stuff! I see you're studying the right things, keep it up! You're on the right track.

The transition to digital can be very annoying... I see that you're trying to mix your colors on the canvas, and I have a suggestion that will make the color management in photoshop waay easier. Search for Coolorus, it's a photoshop plugin. It allows you to pick a color direcly on the screen, without having to open any menus. It has a color wheel and various sliders, fully customizable. It made digital painting enjoyable to me. I hope it helps!

@SaulGarcia - Thank you for the advice. I have a lot of customization to do!

@Rhasdra - Thanks! I've seen Coolorus used by people on Youtube. I thought it was a propriety feature in Photoshop that I was overlooking.... Guess not...

Here's another master study. I decided to review Frazetta. I'm starting to get a much better handle of Photoshops basic features.

    Almost had fun this time.

Had no idea horses were so damned hard to draw. The liquify tool really helped me out on this one. I messed around with coloring and stopped due to time constraints

I needed some hand practice and also wanted to attempt coloring from grayscale using the "color" blend mode. Kinda got the hang of it. I also added color for the horse painting I shared earlier.

I'm trying to focus on making complete pictures. The drawing below is a WIP. Will most likely reconfigure colors to something less garish after rendering. All suggestions are welcome.
