    Tryna git gud

    Hello,
I've been drawing for years but only recently have I tried to start taking it seriously. I'm currently an engineering student, so art is a hobby rather than a profession for me but I'd still like to devote the time to improve and learn. I'll try to post here pretty regularly if only to keep track of myself and make sure I'm improving. Any criticism is greatly appreciated! I know I have a lot to learn and can benefit greatly from what others have to say.

First serious practice, started about 2 months ago. Working through the Loomis canon and trying to practice heads, from both studies and imagination. Also I love drawing dinosaurs, so those will be popping up a lot.

More fundamentals, Loomis. Study, study, study. I need to get better at drawing eyes, they're always really wonky

More studies. Realized I can't draw lines or ellipses, so gotta practice that. Working through Earnest Norling's Persoective Made Easy and learning how little I know about perspective. Trying to learn more anatomy. And just having fun drawing.

Your dinosaurs are lovely and kudos to you for pursuing drawing as a hobby. I think you would enjoy the blog Gurney Journey (by the author/illustrator of Dinotopia) and the book "Feathered Dinosaurs: The Origin of Birds" by John Long (it's pricey so see if your library has it).

Pixie Tricks-Thanks for the recommendation! I've been checking out Gurney Journey for a while, great blog. I will have to look for the dinosaur book, that sounds right up my alley.

More practice. Didn't get to draw as much as I would have liked over the past couple of days but still. Trying to think and see in 3 dimensions. I'm having a lot of trouble making my figures appear 3 dimensional. I lose track of where everything's supposed to go. Have to study more.

Just realized I forgot to flip images when uploading. I'll be more careful in the future.

More sketches. Found Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching I videos, so I'm trying to work through those. Gotta get steadier lines

These pages are huge- try to keep the images you upload to a max of 800-1000 px wide.

More Peter Han, this time Dynamic forms. And now I'm taking a quick break from him to work through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, just to make sure I've got the most basic basic stuff covered. I find that when I do the upside down drawing stuff it actually comes out worse. My proportions go all over the place. It's pretty notable on the heads I drew on the last 2 pages.

Also, I should've drawn more this week but my friend got me Civ 5 so I've been doing a lot of that.

Thanks for the input! You're right, my anatomy definitely needs work, I will get on that.

Also, more stuff I've been working on this week. Dragonfly studies and more Peter Han. I feel like I'm improving? I at least definitely feel like I'm learning enough to have a better idea of what I'm bad at. So that feels good. Also, I like working with a pen, definitely forces me to learn how to make more confident lines.

Awosme sketches! I love the dinosaurs! I freaking love DINOSAURS
anyway I think you should work more on your humans....they lack of anatomy... just take your time to study anatomy piece after piece and you will improve them pretty fast
also you should make your uploading pics smaller.....they are very big and hard do look at that way

Keep up the work and keep it coming

Hey thanks a lot for the encouragement! Yeah, my people need a LOT of work, that's what I've been focusing on lately. I've been doing gesture studies that I'll try to upload soon and I've been working through a lot of the Proko videos on youtube. Any recommendations on good anatomy reference databases?

Also, sorry my photos are still too big, I'll make them smaller in my next uploads.

Well I am using a bridgeman book and try to teach it to myself....but also the proko videos and other youtube tutorials
For practicing I use (like most people ) quickposes.com
But don`t try to fit the time they suggest to you.....take your time and finish the pieces

Aight, I will look up Bridgeman and I've been using quickposes for a while, super useful. Thanks!

School's starting up again, but I'm gonna try for at least 3 sketchbook pages a week and I will try to upload more consistently, like at the end of every week

Still drawing, just usually too lazy/busy to scan. Since I'm in school about half of my drawing is done during class in my notebooks but it's mostly cubes or me grinding heads so I won't bother uploading that stuff

Feeling like I'm actually starting to improve and I know I still have a long long long way to go but it's encouraging and the journey itself is fun
