    Mari (1205) Composition 1.1

(aagh, why did I chose a number as nickname!)

    Hello!
Here is my first study for Level Up
    1 hour 15 mins.
And I did a short analisys about things I can observe in the painting such as the rule of thirds composition or the balance between areas of emphasis with more detail like the face or the clothes and economy areas to rest the eye like the very simple detail.

And, well, sorry about my bad English, i'll try to improve that too! ;D

    Good start
Your values are close, some darks are not that dark
Your mapping it's a off on the top half of the painting, specially the head, it has a different angle and it's wider. in your next study you can start with a general sketch and check the mapping witht he grid, and the turn it off.
also check the blending of the colors, they lookr harsh when it should be smoother.

Nice work right out the gate.

If you squint your eyes while looking at the face, you will see that her face is much lighter than the predominant value you have on yours.

There are a couple lines that distracted me and kept pushing my eyes down and to the right of the piece, they are two dark lines going down the front of her drapery. In the original they are very faint and nearly straight vertical with a slight hint of going to the left. Yours has a curve to the right and are very noticeable.

Looks like you pick up on a ton of small details and are communicating them in such a small amount of time, feel free to spend even more time on the practice if you want, we aren't forced to stay at the hour limit while we are learning these things.

I believe you've confused the composition 1.1 instructions for comp 1.2. You should spend at least 10 hours, attempting to get every detail perfect.

I started mine by creating a grid and drawing the outline of everything in the picture. It makes it much easier to place everything in the painting later.

You could have done a lot with texture brushes. For some reason no one wants to use them.

Thank you! I have fixed the name of the thread to match the exercice I am doing (1.1)

This is my second study! I spent more time on this one but I didn't track it.
I have tried to use texture brushes and the grid (I need to improve a lot but it really helped! ^_^)
    Thanks for all the feedback!!

Nice improvement 1205! The head and nose are slightly wider in your master copy, but keep working on the proportions and angles and you'll nail these portraits in no time. Also would like to see how you view the composition via analysis.

    Keep on rockin!

    Hi!

I forgot to upload the study of the second painting!
And I have done a new one, This time I chose something "bigger", not a portrait because I find really dificult to paint images with lots of elements so I decided to step a little bit out of my comfort zone and star doing studies of more complex images. Step by step, I have planned forward a couple of studies of full body portraits and then some compos with a couple of characters, then more characters and I hope to be able (and not afraid of ) to do studies of some big images like Vasily Ivanovich Surikov or Laurence Alma Tadema paintings.

That's my plan ^_^ What do you think?

Beautiful study, you nailed it quite good, the values are so close and your brush stroke is also very similar to the original painting, you only have to be more presice on the soft edges and the texture.
    Keep the good work!!!

    Study #4!
I think I'll be able to catch up with comp 1.1 now that I have more time!
This time I chose an Alexander Jonh White painting.
I found superinteresting the shapes contrast on this one.
Same as it happens in the violins/cellos there is a strong straight line cut by another one and more curvy/rounded shapes around. I don't know if that was on porpouse but it caught my eye
Also, I love the use of light on this one

    Another one! about
Today I wanted to paint a male chararacter or well, not another woman... found this one seemed interesting!
About 3 hours on this one! This time it was harder to place everything in its place and size! Still having problems with head sizes, hahaha. and now that I look at it his clothes might be a little bit too big in some parts,...oh

    6# study
It was about 2-2:30 hours of work. I could have spend more time on textures but well, I was more interested in light this time.
Today I read about "sources of light" in painting and came across the light sources out of the canvas and hidden light sources so I chose a painting where I could practice this!

    Another one!
Different composition, not a full canvas image this time.
I recently read about the placement of character on the screen for animation/movies and this "heads triangle". So I found this Cornwell painting following the same principle and decided to do this study.
I could I have worked a bit more in some areas and sould have checked proportions again but, I guess it is okay for what I wanted to learn from this one

You're doing very well. A little more care with the bigger shapes would go a long way. Your values are not far off on that last one, except the edge of the letter, which should be a minor focal point. Well done on the edges.

    #13 is done
I really like this simple composition and the rhythm I found in the female figure. It would be totally different if she was standing more "straigth" and "grounded"

I thought this one was really simple but after the study I realized that viewer's attention follow a very particular path towards the character face
    and it's so beautiful!

You are doing an absolutely stellar job. I am very happy to see this, especially the analysis and of course the quality of the rendering and studies. At this point just wrap the last two up and I will look forward to seeing you progress into the more challenging assignments.
