    Hi folks!

If you don't already know, I would like to be the bearer of good news! You can now download DAKOTA RAWHIDE BOOK 1 in PDF form! Just follow the link and enjoy:

    DAKOTA RAWHIDE

Let me know what you think. Any and all feedback is veeeery much appreciated. Also, check out the galleries, there might be a few new pieces, or previously unseen pieces.

I have begun work on BOOK 2, which will be available at Comic Con 2010, and have also been working like a pyramid-building slave on hammering out the story for a Dakota Rawhide novel!!! Busy busy busy. At any rate. I hope you love it all. Thank you!

    Cheers,
    ~D/L

Ah, thank you! Yeah, I was surprised the colors printed so well. They did a nice job, and managed to make me come off as halfway intelligent

Yeah, the pdf is epic, you're a real inspiration man. I don't often comment on threads by artist better than myself, that I can't offer advice on, such as yours. But I come back often and look at your work for inspiration, so thank you for sharing your skill with us.

Quike Garcia: Thank you! And yes, please let me know what you think once you've finished it. Even if it's a "this sucks". That at least tells me I have very very far to go

Hyptosis: Thanks! Your coming back means a lot to me. I, in turn, then have to apologize for not updating much of late. I have been writing and story developing more in my free time. Any artwork has been for clients and cannot be shown. Perhaps I'll see about sneaking some pieces up here though. All covert, Ezio style We'll see. I'll try and get something up soon! Thank you, again, for the kind words.

    Cheers,

Ah ha! I haven't posted this one yet. Well, I had posted it on my website, but chances are folks haven't seen it here. At least not all of you! You can also check out the gallery at www.ArtDL.com for some new pieces scattered about.

This is a WIP. But, for the record, it has been a WIP for a couple months now. When it will egress from WIP status, I do not know. Workin' on it, workin' on it. Obviously I've barely touched the figures yet. So much to do. Can I have 30 hour days?

    Cheers,

    Thanks Jamie! Much appreciated.

I'm sure you all know of the ImagineFX Cover Contest. I figured I might as well enter with, obviously, a Dakota illustration. This is what I have so far. Now it is just about finessing some details and whatnot. A few little things I'm not happy with yet. I don't have too much more time to spend on it since I have to actually work too... not to mention trying to hustle on DAKOTA RAWHIDE BOOK 2!! Anyway...

    Hope you enjoy!

Man, I thought I had told you my impression about book one before..

Ok, first of all I really like the topic and the atmosphere (really really, I've always wanted to do something similar, even made designs for plasma revolvers based on the ITER concept, but never came out in the end ), and the rhythm too. I think it's promising as a first number, and I'd really like to read more. What comes to my mind is that maybe you should work a bit more on the descriptions (just my opinion) because sometimes I feel that there's too much detail on them that staggers a bit the flow of narration.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, and waiting for book 2 Thanks for doing it

By the way, the cover looks great but after reading the book I'm missing a bit more of attitude

More attitude, huh? I'll see what I can muster up

I agree about the descriptions in BOOK 1, actually. I've already pared them down considerably in BOOK 2. I went on a reading binge once I finished writing the first book and realized that all the books I liked the most didn't describe the character visually, but rather did it through actions. Not to mention, if I'm illustrating it, I really don't need a verbal description of what they look like. Redundancy at its best, right?

Thank you so much for the feedback! It helps a lot. Especially when your feelings about it mirror my own.

    Cheers,
    ~D/L

Cy-AN & Surion: Thank you! Happy you're diggin' it and joining the fun!

    ========================================

I've realized I really haven't been drawing from life or even photos very much in the last two years and as a result my knack for getting a likeness, which I thought was a little more inherent than it is , has been suffering. So! I have been doing some portraits in my 8"x5" Moleskine with ball point pen. The ball point allows me to get a soft line if necessary, but forces me to make choices as I cannot erase it. The 6th one missed the mark. Damn. But 5 for 6 ain't bad. 83%. If only I was always that consistent. At any rate! In order of appearance: Natalie Portman, Monica Bellucci, Dakota Tayler, Émilie Dequenne (the initial inspiration for Dakota's look, FYI)

So that is that. Done and done. More to come before too long.
    Cheers!

nice ink sketches, you definitely like your girls with fuller lips
    me too!
Monika is looking pretty rakish and you`ve really got those lips to a tee....to be honest both the top two look like Natalie, was one of them supposed to be Dakota Tayler?
i really don`t know who Dakota Tayler is......
    and where is the fifth?

lovely work as usual....i`ve been looking through and sketching Frank Frazetta lately, love that guys work......

Krispee, you gotta keep up with my hectic thought process!!

The first 2 are indeed Natalie; the 3rd is Monica Bellucci; the 4th is Dakota "Rawhide" Tayler (my own character; see my website); the 5th & 6th are Émilie Dequenne. The 6th one is FAIL

    And, yes, full lips... *sigh

Ah ha! That explains it. The 6th one isn't bad, it just only looks half like Émilie Dequenne. Literally. The left half looks like her, but the right half doesn't. Weird. And if this were MY dream, that vodka would be Bourbon

so that`s 5 1/2 out of 6, pretty darn good in anyones sketchbooks.....and she does look purdy
Bourbon is the equivalent of Whiskey in this country isn`t it?
if you were knocking back that stuff like that little smiley would be the last thing on your mind
i think the english word for that would be 'legless' haha

It's about that time: coming up to San Diego Comic Con in a few months and hustling to get everything finished, namely DAKOTA RAWHIDE BOOK II. I've made good progress on the writing and am ready to jump into the illustrations, so soon you'll be seeing some previews and whatnot. For now, if you have not yet been to ArtDL.com, here is the latest Dakota depiction as the harbinger of BOOK II.

    Cheers,

Always a pleasure to see your works, great rendering and characters.
I also know a classmate who really resembles your "Dakota", hehe.
Hope to see new works soon!

Woah, I have a site too! (Crappy multilanguage option implemented, and a tad old in the drawing field)
