Quikenobi: Thank you! "Big cats and girls" is one of my favorite topics... I don't know why?! Really glad you're diggin' everything.
MeTaL-Mike: Thanks man. Makes me feel like I should do more watercolors...
Eon: Thank youuuuu! It was SUCH an undertaking! I really had no idea what I was setting myself up for, so I just had to keep my head down lest I should see just how far away that horizon really was. But I finished it! Now it's on to BOOK 2
For those of you that like really short stories, which I am calling Tiny Stories, head on over to The D/L Blog! I have just started posting a Tiny Story every other day. Please leave your comments, crits, anything! Thank you!
Now, on to the show! Here are a few images and pages from the interior of DAKOTA RAWHIDE BOOK 1. After the story portion of the book, I have outtakes and exploration sketches, basically the book form of DVD Special Features
Okay that's it!
Don't forget to head over The D/L Blog for a couple of Tiny Stories!
This: http://www.artdl.com/rawhide/Dakota_window.jpg is really wonderful
and I really enjoyed the Quercetum story.. really graphic
Nice , good work and style..
It's been quite some time since my last visit in here, and I have got to give you some well deserved praise on your progress and work recently. There's a really noticeable jump in improvements from page 32 to now. Great job, man. The Dakota Rawhide business is awesome.
Starred ya up as well!
Ghostbrush: Thank you! I'm glad you like the stories so far. A couple of them stand out a lot more than the others for me... but I suppose that is part of the learning process. It would be fun to eventually do a book of something like that for sure. Good call
Quikenobi: Thanks! That is one of my favorites as well... both the image you plugged and the story!
Joseba Alexander: Gracias! I appreciate it.
sketcheth: Thank you! I don't sketch in pen too often, but when I do, I always have a blast. Glad you're diggin' it too.
Eon: Ha ha! I totally thought of that image too when I was sketching the new one. Thanks for remembering that far back
IanE: Hey thanks for the stars!!
Yeah, most likely that jump in progress has to do with how much I've been sketching in the last 18 months. Which also accounts for my lack of posting since most of the stuff I'm doing I cannot show publicly. Damn NDA's. Though if anyone went to SDCC and saw that monstrous Darksiders banner on the back wall well... I was the designer on that one. I didn't paint it, that credit goes to my housemate Jeff Nentrup, but I was the sketch artist that designed the image. Good times.
So, I did this test page for a comic... didn't get it though. However I am doing another test for it since they want to go more painterly. They felt this one had too much line work. Really just a stylistic choice. But I thought I'd post it anyway since I had a blast.

Man, looks really great..
Soooooo... I have not been doing ANY "painting" on the computer. Sure, I've done a few images here and there, but all in all, in the last 3 years I have mostly relied on my drawings to do the work. I am now realizing how much that has limited my versatility. That means it is time for me to regain the comfort I once had in Photoshop with regards to creating a fully painted image. I am starting on the more basic end with single "figures". Hopefully it won't take too long to achieve said comfort.
For my first go! I decided to do a Trolloc as I always imagined them. Well, one type of Trolloc anyway. I might tackle a couple others, just for the hell of it. This is still a WIP, but I think it is coming along. Well, I'm diggin' it, but you don't have to
where's that "i bow to you" smiley! arg! cheers mate
Eon: Thank you! Hopefully I get around to finishing it...
Joe Brown: Ha! Thanks
Well, I switched gears and went toward A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE instead. I love that series... mostly because I am a sucker for Fantasy stories for mature audiences. Anyway, I've been fascinated with the Wights for a while, so I thought I'd do a sketch of one of them today. So here he is! Fresh from beyond The Wall!
The wight is great man... awesome..
Planning to do any of the main characters? I'm, a sucker for fantasy too...
Have you read Belgarath Chronicles?
Your understanding of light is amazing!
Really inspiring everytime i visit your sketchbook
Till next time -Jamie

Trashy: Thank you! I got a lot of great responses to that book cover... but I think folks were intimidated by the word count within
Quike Garcia: Thank you! And yes I am... and no I have not, but I will keep it in mind the next time I am looking for a series to start.
liam.c: Thanks! And, luckily, they are currently paying the bills.
OmertA: Hey thanks! Working out the play of light on forms is one of my favorite parts of planning an image, so I'm glad you're diggin' it.
Carnifex: Thank you sir! Yeah, I agree. I'd like to give the wight another go. Really it is all leading up to an actual illustration of Jon Snow and Sam Tarly fighting some wights and Others... though I'm not sure if they ever actually fight them together... I can't recall. Maybe they will in the next book. At any rate, he ended up being a little older than I intended, but that's okay. Older Jon Snow, younger Ned Stark... who's counting
So, here is a 45 minute speed portrait of Jon Snow. Slowly getting back to doing some straight forward character design. Little by little.
Yeah, I thought about showing him with short hair... I just thought that maybe after being a crow, well... they don't seem like the cleanliest lot in the world But maybe I'll show him with short hair too. Just another excuse for another portrait, right? At least we were along the same lines!
Great portrait of Jon Snow.. specially the eyes expression
Hey thanks guys! Here's a more complete start on Jon Snow for ya!
It's still a WIP. I'm forcing myself to slow down a bit. After this I'll probably tackle Jaime Lannister, though I'm not sure if it will be pre- or post-maiming. Probably post- because that's when he gets really interesting. Anyway, hope you dig Jon so far...
perhaps alittle too old-looking(imo),but neat costume. heh,i always pictured khal drogo like that mongolian guy from "the quest"
yes, post maiming adds more depth to jamie...goddamnit when's the new book coming out?!
Nice armour on Jon, though I've always pictured him a bit more skinny.
I really like the idea of the post maiming Jaime.. before he's just a prick .
For me Khal Drogo is a mixture between the bad guy from Disney's Mulan and the bad guy from Highlander III.. (yup, I saw it.. not that I'm proud though...)
Carnifex: I definitely want to make him a little younger. Once I get some more done on the painting I'll revisit his face.
Quike Garcia: I would imagine that under all that leather, wool, chain mail and fleece to protect against the bitter cold on The Wall, he might be a little skinnier than he appears here Drogo would be a fun one too, though I think I might tackle one of the ladies after Jaime... not sure yet though.
Glad y'all are diggin' it so far.
