CHOW #378 :: The Old Apothecary

CHOW #378 :: The Old Apothecary

    Character of the Week #378
    The Old Apothecary

    Deadline - Sunday, May 24th 10PM GMT

Deep within a forest, outside of the Tussnech kingdom, there is an apothecary who travels to and fro, selling his goods. He has everything from elixirs and medicinal herbs to fake limbs and bandages. The mystery about him is that he only shows up before something terrible happens. Whether its a sickness or a war, he has something for any situation, but a limited supply. Some say danger is his shadow and if you see him, you better buy what he has or leave the kingdom.

    The Requirements
    • Can be male or female.
    • Must be human
    • Appears to be around 70 years old
    • Has a pack full of his goods

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up). No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please and no multiple submissions.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll. Character MUST be readable (A 3D modeler must be able to model the character by looking at your image). Polished line-art is acceptable.
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work.
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread.
    • Design your character for the brief, not for your personal fetish. Keep the designs practical.
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

Hey everyone. I need to make an announcement!

There are some revision to the rules as of NOW.

First, the No Background rule is removed. Illustration of the week doesn't exist anymore, so if you wish to do a full illustration, then you may now do so. Be warned though, do not bite off more than you can chew. Failure to meet the quality requirement with the character will result in being cut from the poll. So if you dont have time, then only do the character.

Second, clarifying the quality requirements. Your design must be readable. What does this mean? ChoW is about practicing to make it in the real world. In the real world, a lot of 3D artists don't draw or paint like us. So pretend your entry is going to be submitted and passed on to a 3D artist. If there is something that makes no sense on it, the 3D artist wont understand what they are looking at. So if your entry is sloppy or makes no sense to me, it will not be in the poll. Concept art is all about making the idea understandable. It's easier to make a scribbled environment make sense than to make a scribbled character make sense. So no scribbles....

Another amazing topic, this time I have to draw something for the challenge
@wugols2004 grandpa with a six pack huh ? watch out the perspective on the hut when drawing final version, roof seem to be a little bit of. also, how on earth he is able to carry it around with just one strap xD
@Eric Young neat lines! liking the details, can't wait to see colored version just one thing I noticed - her eyes are a bit to close to each other

Hallo, this is my current stage. I know it says "only one character".
But this is concept art, and for me, it is very important to have some variety.
Of course, i will post only one character in final thread.

Did some rough silhouettes and hair and mask ideas. I'll vary the face shape depending on what design is going to be used. If anyone has any critiques on the design feel free to comment!

Starting off with a plague doctor-style mask and seeing where the winds take me. I'm thinking I'll keep the characters' gender ambiguous.

refining the character a bit more...

he will make use of his extra arms to set up and take down his bag/tent/shop stand thing. he also uses them to erect the umbrellas in case of rain, and to light the lanterns under the canopy when traveling at night.

Fun subject, I've started sketching on a few different characters so far. :>

NicoleWG: I think if you want him to look crazy, you should think about using more extreme body language, as well as work with facial muscles and eyes. Some tension is good for crazy.

unique_litani: I would suggest looking at his posture some more, the body is twisting in a way that's hard to read; the arm with the torch is going back and to the side in a way that it shouldn't at that angle, and his left leg would have to be longer than his right one when his hip is turned that way.

Let's carry all the goods on head, free protection from rain. And too much moisture is bad for wrinkles .

    @PxelSlayer - cool expresion!
@Eric Young - can't wait to see finished version, really nice shading
@MrSun - work on A like spikey boots and pointy nose
@NickyBeats - cool idea with extra sets of arms to help him carry this enormous backpack
@OatmealMu - loving the mask, wonder what his outfit wil look like
