Hi there! Welcome to the forum!

Pardon me for contradicting you, but I believe you're better at drawing than you think You've already got a good deal of "flowiness" in your lines, for instance. Your hard work is paying off! Just keep at it and you'll get there. YOU WILL.

Also, your cartoon characters are adorable, lol. A great way to let out some of that self-criticism. Just please lighten up on yourself, if you can. We all start somewhere, and there's no shame in that

I appreciate that you stated your goals upfront. You've clearly got a destination in mind, and that helps me know how to help you. For now, all I can say is keep doing what you're doing and, again, be a little nicer to yourself.

    Good luck!

So this is kind of early for stuff, but I've got it done and happen to be at the computer now.

    @emalin,

Thank you. The extreme criticism is something I'm trying to do less of. I think the comic characters kind of help with that.

Nice studies David. I can see from those cartoons that you have a great ability to tell a story with a pose. Whatever you do, don't lose that! Bring that same liveliness to more realistic drawings. Keep it up!

Thanks guys. It's very different to hear positive opinions about my work. Not that people insult me all the time or anything. I've always just keep it stowed away in sketchbooks.

I actually heard someone quote Leonardo da Vinci's last words yesterday.
He said "I have offended god and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have."

Clearly artists tend toward having a skewed opinion about their art. I don't want to be that way. Anyway, here's the stuff for today. Not much in the way of studies. I just felt like goofing around.

I really like your sketches, I am glad you stopped by my kindness thread!
Love the stick figures and pencil sketches. I wonder about your hands did
you ever try drawing them with boxes instead of cycles, it gives them more
structure! I have for sure some hand in my sb, pls swing by there!

Wow. How long has it been? Ah, doesn't matter.

Man, I feel like a different person started this sketchbook. I forgot that I used to be so gloomy and down on myself. Anyway, I felt like uploading a couple of sketches.

Just having some fun in my favorite medium.

I'm 29 now dudes. I've been reviewing my goals in life. I've already completed a few and am pretty happy. After reviewing my art-related goals I realized that I didn't actually have a solid idea for what I wanted to accomplish. The last time I had any kind of art goal was back in college when I first got into drawing. Those goals mainly consisted of: learn how to draw cool stuff that looks real. Kinda vague huh? I managed to figure out how to make stuff look "real" or 3D I should say, back in 2012. Since then I've just been floundering without any real sense of purpose. I still practice, but it's always the same stuff so I never improve. I guess my birthday kind of shook the cobwebs loose.

So, I sat down yesterday and wrote everything that came to mind: things I cared about accomplishing and things I did not.
One of my major aspirations is to be able to communicate my art with as few pencil or paintbrush strokes as possible. I like being able to see brush and linework in shading. I'd like my art to leave room for the imagination while not being considered abstract. I'm not interested in hyper realism or photo manipulation. I'm interested in creating elegant designs within the framework of realism. These pictures must also have a simple story being told within them. I like the notion of placing one shape next to another shape and letting juxtaposition create the scene. I also want my art to reflect my interest in high fantasy and surrealism.
As for why I'm back in this sketchbook; I want to get out of the echo chamber that is my head. I'm trying to set my ego aside and allow people to see my work in all its chaos. I think the mental health rewards that come with the freedom to display my failures along with the successes will be worth it. Even if I'm just posting in a vacuum for awhile. Note that this means I'm not culling studies which make no visual sense to you. Otherwise I'd never post. I know this from experience. This is for me, and you're welcome to look on in bewilderment.

A few final notes: if you're below my skill level, please don't take the notes I tend to write on my sketches as gospel. Half the time I forget why I even wrote them.

Here's stuff from today and yesterday.

It's good to see you're posting again. I respect your ability to sit down and think about your life and come up with a plan of where you want to take it, and that you're actually following up on it too. Sketches are looking good but you could really benefit from some kind of direction on where to go, as your studies seem to be a bit all over the place atm. Maybe studying a particular book for a while could be good, I can recommend the Force figure drawing books or Loomis' for anatomy or How to Draw by Scott Robertson for perspective. Both things you'll need to get a firm understanding of if you want to paint semi realistic images. I hope to see you continue posting and see your progress, good luck!

Thanks Dennis. I completely agree that my practice needs direction. I'm currently trying to sort through what my priorities are in regard to what I need to study. I already know that Composition and a detailed understanding of anatomy are major blips on my radar. I'm slowly working through this book at the moment: https://archive.org/details/compositionserie00dowauoft I've made it to pg 23 so far. It's really good.
I'll definitely give your book recommendations a look see.
I'm also studying for my EPA certification so I can work with refrigerants in air conditioners. Lots of reading going on over here.

Here's what I did today and late last night.

I was watching Spaceballs and drawing. I love that movie.

I think for now I'm going to split my time between in-depth anatomy study and composition study. Those are the big ones for me. I have this desire to be able to draw every single part of the human body from memory. So I figure if I study each bone individually, I'll get there one day.

I've found that all the bones have similar patterns that repeat throughout the forms. For me, finding these patterns makes it easier to understand how an individual bone flows. It's all similar in the same way that a tree is similar to its branches in shape.

Good to see some life studies but wondering why do you paint so small? I would say use whole space of that canvas for study or at least do it bigger

Great amount of work and I think it's great you also upload the more goofy stuff. I think getting the likeness of someone is a lot harder when drawing them somewhat unrealistically as a lot of visual cues come from small changes in value but it's definitely good to practice getting likeness with fewer lines as you are now. Keep working hard and you'll get there no problem.

These guys showed up in my childhood. I remember they were surrounding my bed, watching me like this. I could see them even though my eyes were shut. I knew that they were waiting for me to open my eyes. I kept my eyes closed and pretended to sleep walk into my parents room. I woke the next morning in my parents bed. I call them the Alajallah and they're a race in the imaginary universe I'm constructing.

    Bunch of random doodles

My mother is religious and teaches at a private christian school. She was talking to the kids about some of the mythological beings in the bible and they wanted to see what one of them looked like. Well, let me tell you. A six winged creature is a horrible concept. I made tons of sketches trying to figure out how to do that.

This is the result. I'm not sure where this thing is described in the bible, but I think whoever saw this was tripping balls on mushrooms or something at the time.

I noticed how the digital brushes were acting like real brushes at this point and began trying to use them as such.

Hmmm, the painting studies are nice, and if you want to improve them further, it beneficial to try and do some drawing studies as well. I suggest that because I feel it's easier to learn form by drawing rather than painting, and a strong sense of form will be helpful in making your pieces more believable. Keep up the good work!

So I've got some stuff here. No completed stuff just some sketches from the last few days. It's not really in order because there was just a lot and I didn't want to sort through it and name it all properly.

You can see I've still got a long way to go. (I wasn't trying to make the mushroom look like a penis ready to explode. Totally accidental cropping there.)
