Art from the China Museum of Art in Shanghai.

I had the opportunity to visit the China Art Museum in Shanghai recently and I was surprised by the diversity of art being exhibited. As a westerner my view of Chinese art was that it was mostly propaganda and Chinese traditional in style but thats not the case at all. There's actually a lot of positive European influence and technically trained artists in China. In places like Shanghai especially, there was a healthy fusion of western oil painting styles and Chinese calligraphy/water color styles as well as art done western style with Chinese themes. Although western modern pop-art and architecture has been popular in the last decade in China(i.e. Laughing man, birds nest, meat man, and the art of Wei Wei) it's really not the most expressive of what China was and is culturally. So I'm starting this thread to post some art from China that I saw so people can view and comment on.

The China Art Museum in Shanghai. Amazingly huge and somewhat intimidating from the outside walking in. Similar in size/style to the EDO museum in Tokyo.

    Pioneers - Chen Yifei, Weijingshan - 1972

Even though this is classic propaganda style, which the west has somewhat of an aversion to because of politics, it actually works really well.

Along The River During Qing Ming Festival (Shang He Tu) - there are multiple copies in history but it is considered to be the 'Mona Lisa' of China. This is just a very small photo of a photo of a section of the painting. It's a scroll painting from the 11th century and is originally 26cm high(10 inches) and 5.25 meters long(About 17.5 feet) the artist historically attributed to creating it was Zhang Zeduan. The China Art Museum currently has an exhibit that enlarges the painting about 100 times and animates the entire painting and projects it onto a wall using the changing of the light from day to night and sounds to bring it all to life.

Einstein visiting Shanghai - Yu Xiaofu, Sun Yuhong, Liu Jianbin, Guon Guoyu, 2012. In the early 1920s Albert Einstein visited Shanghai to lecture about the theory of Relativity. Although somewhat forgotten in time, this painting helps recollect/imagine the event.

The Battle For Shanghai (Songhu HuiZhan)- Yao Erchong

In 1937 the Chinese National Revolutionary Army (NRA) fought a determined and more powerful Japanese army for 3 months. Eventually the Japanese won the battle but at a much greater cost than anticipated. The battle was overlooked by some western powers because they felt they couldn't do much to help. For America, WW2 in the Pacific lasted about 4 years but for China it lasted 8 long years. Despite defeat The battle of Shanghai was a source of Chinese Nationalism during the war years and helped China buy time to defend itself.
