    Celebrity artists?

Hi everyone. I have a question. Does anyone know of any celebrities who are artists. The only ones that come to mind are Drew Barrymore and Paul McCartney. Any others come to mind?

    Thanks. Rachel

..dam I know there are A LOT of actors that are great artists, just can't remmember all their names.

I mean, if you had to wait around on set for hours what else would you do?

Well, I don't know about the "great" part. There are a lot of celebs who do competent work, but not the sort of stuff anyone would pay attention to if they weren't famous for something else.

Off the top of ny head, in no particular order...
    Ron Wood
    Billy Dee Williams
Martin Mull (went to RISD, also a collector, knows his stuff)
David Bowie (has also intervewed several artists for Modern Painters magazine)
    Tony Curtiss
Maralyn Manson (exactly what you would expect)
    Jonathan Winters
    Anthony Quinn
    Red Buttons (clown paintings)
    Claudette Colbert (pretty good, actually)
Jonie Mitchell (has painted several of her own album covers)

marilyn manson i can understand wanting to express himself...but billy dee williams?.....lando..an artist?

and might i add...manson has some outrageous prices for his "art"

And now the real question... which celebrities are members of CA? I don't want to expose anyone, but I think there are some amongst us.

oh yeah Lando is an artist
my mom was in san francisco one time and was talking to his art agent for a while and ended up going to his opening that night, got pictures of some of his paintings.. haha there are a couple awesome mixed media Empire Strikes Back paintings... sorta spraypaint and photo collage style.
i think he owns a gallery in sf too... ?

Jake Bannon, the singer of Converge, does some really great work.... prints and graphics etc.

and yeah Viggo Mortenson is a great photographer... havent had a chance to see what his paintings are like though.

i really like Ed Templeton's work (pro-skateboard guy)... i like his paintings and photography quite a bit. http://www.toymachine.com/art.php?catriderid=2

Jeff Bridges does alot of black and white photography and Denis Hoper likes to paint.
Few months ago on Bravo they did 10 year anniversary issure on Actors Studio. Its a show where actors come and do an interview at a film school in front of students, they answer their questions and so on. At the end of the interview they always ask them a bunch of questions which are the same questions they ask every actor/actress. One of the questions is "What would they like to do other then being in film" and most answered question was to be a Painter.

I saw Viggo's photo exhibition in Wellington, we actually thought he was doing it as a prank like - "Look I'm famous so these dumb NZ'ers will feature my art no matter how bad it is"
I mean they were all photos he'd taken by spinning around in various suburbs or small towns and were named for where they were taken. Deep.
At least we hope it was a piss-take, fantastic sense of humour

In the Kristiansand zoo here in norway there is a chimp called julius. (semi-famous.) He paints, and his paintings are sold at quite high prices. (for some save-the-chimps-charity)

shit i think we are all missing the point here. te best way to become a visual artist is to make it big as an actor or musician first! see, we are all trying to do it the hard way! if we have film, tv, or album credits, its obviously a lot easier to be taken seriously as an artist!-c36

There is a great scene in the movie 'Wings of Desire', which feature Peter Falk (Columbo) playing himself as an actor on a movie set, and hes going around to extras and sketching their portraits. The whole movie is very surreal and touching in this way.

I know this thread has come up before somewhere; anyway, I know I've mentioned that John Cameron is an artist. He designed the Alien Queen, and drew the sketches of Kate Winslet in Titanic. Speaking of Aliens, Ridley Scott went to the Royal Art Academy and storyboards all his movies himself, or so I understand. His art looks very Moebius-ish. Of course, there is also Tim Burton, who started as a Disney animator. I've seen Pierce Brosnan in art magazines occassionally.

    Nimrod,

I love that movie "Wings of Desire."
If I remember correctly, Peter Falk said he picked up the sketching habit years ago to help alleviate the boredom that comes while waiting for scenes to be set up. While they were filming "Wings of Desire," Wim Wender noticed him sketching and decided to incorporate it into the movie.
