    IDW # 276 : A.I. companion

    IDW # 276 : A.I. companion

    TITLE: IDW # 276: A.I. companion

    A.I. companion.
    Deadline: Sunday, February 15th

Artificial Intelligence has been the subject of science and science fiction ever since the computer was invented. From Asimovís IíRobot to Kubrickís A.I. whether friend or foe, people have always been fascinated with the question, what if robots were conscious? The latest story to be told in this genre is Ex Machina by Alex Garland, a british sci-fi film, that was released earlier this year. I highly recommend everyone to watch it, as itís an amazingly beautiful and thought provoking film.

This fortnight you are to design yourself an A.I. companion.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw an A.I. companion.
    2. That's it... now draw!

I remember suggesting something similar on your ideas thread and you were (quite rightly) worried that it would turn into a character design. Are there any further criteria for this one? Ie: non humanoid, etc? Could I design a very advanced tamagotchi?

    Thanks.

Moirae - I know you did, that's why I want to leave this one open to interpretation. As long as it can be a companion and work with people in some way then all's good. Yes it can be a tamagotchi if you want, it can be a robot or a mechanical animal, just have fun designing something cool.

Just some initial sketching, not sure where I'll go with this one yet.

JPK - Nice sketches, makes me think of a cross between south park and borderlands.

Here is what I have done so far. I wanted to start with a believable power source, so I did some research into fusion reactors. Apart from the scale (should be the size of a building) I think the mechanism works: Plasma chamber surrounded by a liquid lithium blanket. Hot plasma heats steam and using a micro turbine generates electricity. Also deuterium is used but that's the extent of my intellect! The A.I. "heart" is then surrounded with a helium / carbon dioxide coolant, giving the A.I the appearance of breathing, but really cooling the radiant heat. The necessary lithium / deuterium and helium replenishment would be via the mouth, giving the appearance of eating and drinking. The cpu would be based on advanced quantum / biological computing.
