Way to go on these life drawings man...you keep these up and you'll be kicking some major ass. One thing I kinda noticed...and I could be wrong...but I looks like you don't really draw any construction lines or guidlines for yourself and I really think it would help you out when placing the eyes and ears etc. Right now some of the faces look a little distorted due to the placement of some of the features. And it's always a good idea to draw through as well which I noticed you did on a lot of your sketches. Keep pluggin' man you'll get there.

    Hey There!!

Here are some more life sketches with some sloopy doodles.
And a portrait of my roomate stefan. It really looks like him.
It was really fun doing this. And he was really tired and I think
he really looks tired on that portrait. Very happy about this....

    Hey Ulysses!!
Thanx for comin in here man!! Yeah I didn't do any guide lines before.
Because a friend told me that I should concentrate on the forms of the faces.
But for real it's damn difficult but it was a great exercise for me.
On the last few sketches I used guidlines and for real they really looked a little bit like the people. thanx!!!

    sorry?

Hey Soja, iam new to this site and i was checkin out ur sketchbook. kick ass hardcore, i like that man, gotta keep workin hard to get better and better, as do i, cause rite now i suck. but i notice in you pictures of other ppl it says Sorry! Is this like a signature ? or is this an appology because u took the time to draw something for them and in turn are appologizing because you think its crappy? cant do that man, its negative! my friend yelled at me for that same thing, although u may not realize it it is reflecting your attitude about your work, that your unconfident in it. U shouldnt be ashamed of your work like that, it is really really good. better then most of the kids at my art college.

keep it up brother, be proud of your work.

    hi soja !

you have a nice sketchbook here !

my opinion is that your lines are too unsecure, too much lines in one area, three lines that could be done with one for example...more confidence in you lines, try to think of the line before you draw it so tha you're not adjusting it with extra lines as you go along the shape... but it will get better with time !

cheers ! and dont stop drawing and posting !

merry christmas and a happy new year !

    German poems?

    Hey soja,
You really have energy! Great portraits. I like your selfportraits a lot.
Do you speak German or where does the poem come from? (I am from Germany...)

    Talking critz

    h0yya s0ja

    CC

nice stuff u got there.. ur approaches are really good.. theres nothing bad.. but then.. it goes down with symmetrie perspective and anatomy..

its the part who needs most of time we spend when we draw...

somehow my bad drawings motivated me to think alot about drawing and how to draw and how to learn how to draw..

what we do : we draw anyways.. but we get more efficient .. when we focus on basics like.. how to : symmetrie .. how to : perspective .. how to : distance * vanishing point*

what i wanna say is : u can draw the next 4 years without thinking about : how its possible : .. and u become pro some day for sure
what else u can do ? : u can focus on some of these basics and become a pro in.. 2 years ? ;>.. when u focus in drawing basics knowledge u ever get an idea on how and where to improve.. what problems u need to solve and how u have to solve them

since i revealed some knowledge about all that inside me.. i spend all my drawing time in learning drawing basics : perspective drawing *foreshortening and vanishing point included ! * symmetrie and dynamic

whatever and whenever i draw just a simple line or something.. i never forgett about the lines perspective.. its allignment into 3dSpace and its foreshortening amount ... i keep them in mind all the time.. without .. i cant draw.. because my face wont look face like without symmetrie and knowledge about the faces volume*surface ... how to understand volume*surface ?

get the object u wanna draw and analyse it from diffrent viewports .. at least 3.. for full 3d view u need 129600 views...i startet with : profile view 90 degree rotate
and front view : 0 degree rotate
when i mix these 2 views i have 45 and i get a half rotate view from my face of cube or car or whatever i wanna draw..

there are 3 axis u can do and measure that rotation .in the example above i only use 1 axis

the exact profile is set up with lines and angles *it may consfuses u * but change line lenght and line angles and u get diffrent facial characteristics*

after practicing front and profle view.. i stratet drawing more rotates.. 20 degrees 45 60 75 etc.. to understand my volume in more orientations then only 1.. because : what i need is to controle what i wanna draw.. how to controle ? in my opinion i gain controle when i draw more orientations.. soon i will be able to draw all 12900 orientations.. what i need to do that : practice *some really good tips .. and no : draw draw draw .. observe observer draw from life or whatever*

front view is really tricky because u have shit load of perspective informations which may change when u change ur FOV
when u take a look thru a photo cam with diffrent lenses*objectives.. the FOV change.. the FOV is based on the lense.. cam lense or eye lense.. same setup.. we can change our eyes focus with using and bending the eye lense muscles

first thing is to set up an easy fov *realistic or similar*
cube drawing is excelent exercise.. sounds boring to somebody 4 sure.. but its just the best ! u learn evrything u need to know.. * keep stuff in mind helps u learn and understanding MUCH faster .. there is no other way or guarantee* u learn symmetrie perspective drawing .. vanishing points and dynamic with that exercise.. after i started drawing.. i drew cubes for 3 or 4 month only !.. no faces no anatomy no nothing just CUBES.. and iam still drawing cubes from time to time.. to gain more shape*volume controle

shape *outlines* is what u draw.. volume is what u shade *inside the outlines*

there are some more tips n tricks which can help to understand how to create vanishing points available

i myself am no pro yet.. startet drawing a year+ ago but .. i made really fast skill improvements and realized a lot ... how to draw this and that and bla bla.. sure this would be possible with : draw draw draw and observer observer bla bla bla but i know its because i kept the basics in my mind !

in my opinion.. its the way we learn.. while we keep things in our mind and keep it thinging and doing lotsa calculations * which isnt a part of our consciousness because we do it but we dont realize that we are doing it* things we keep in mind become a part of our consiousness.. its what we need in order to draw :>

our names our abilatys our memorys and lotsa more is part of our consciousness * we dont have to think about .. the only thin is we send a query from our mind to our brain databank and pink we get the wanted information

think about : how to measure symmetrie
draw cubes :: simplify bodys and other stuff u wanna draw .. subdevide them into easy geometry
    : cubes and cylinders
think about : how to create vanishing points * to feel the objects volume and 3Dness .. *

combine that knowledge with anatomy.. and interprete reality as u like !

ur sig... .. are u from germany? O_o

ps : vanishing point hint :::: get a cube... unset it and see how a cube is set up : some 90 degree angles and some 9 lines.. 3 x 3 x 3 paralelles

some for horizontal and some for vertical flat boarders.. paralell lines == NO vanishing point
the thing u need to do in order to create VPs is .. collapsing lines... its the effect u get when u make architecture pics with cam without keeping the cam paralell to the object.. u change the angle for one of ur cube flats * sides and ur vp is created

simple example : u stand in middle of a LONG LONG road... the streed to ya left and right is 40 meters wide..far behind in distance.. its still the same street but its looks smaller .. same when u take ur hand and put in front of ur eye.. its bug isnt it.. but its fake.. it just LOOKS big.. because its close to ur eye.. and ur eye lense is....

now .. move ur hand back as far as u can.. the hand appears smaler now..its fake to.. its the same hand but depending in the distance and ur eye lense.. things getting smaller when the move into distance

when i draw a car on my piece of paper .. its a small car.. the first thing poping up in my mind is the distance.. smal car = far in distance.. i can decide how far away my car is.. or i can draw the surroundings things bigger and much much bigger then u have in reality nad evoila my car becomes a toy car

more cc tips n tricks .. pm me

    keep it that way !!!

hey soja, really like your last portrait. Definitely one of your best.

ps: Hoffe wir sehen uns am Freitag. Und wär' echt klasse, wenn du deine Gnomon-Sammlung nochmal mitbringen kannst.

    hey soya,

I've been wondering whether you study the human head (loomis or other) ? And whether you measure the 'important landmarks' of the head when you do the sp's and p's ?
Because the placing of the features in your selfportraits seem to vary kinda, especially the length from your eyebrows to the base of the nose seems usually quite long (also in portraits of other people), if you know that the 'ideal' is same distance from chin to base of nose, from there to eyebrows and then to the hairline.
When working from life, what you see is of course a lot more important than what you know (your model can have different proportions than the ideal), but I feel that the latter can make you help to see (how to interpret the forms, where to look, ...), spot mistakes more easily (and correct your 'mental image'), and in general improve faster.

    Hope this is helpful.

Keep up the good work ! You've got a great sketchbook and you have improved a lot since september !

Great! This is an excellent sketchbook, you've improved a lot since your first few posts. Everything looks really clean and well drawn, very good work.
