CHOW #369 :: Modern Selene, Goddess of the moon

CHOW #369 :: Modern Selene, Goddess of the moon

    Character of the Week #369
Modern Selene, Goddess of the moon

    Deadline - Sunday, January 11th 10PM GMT

The Greek gods have stayed out of humanity's affairs for quite some time now. So instead they spend their time with their own kind. But some who have always had an interest in humans still stay close. Selene, the goddess of the moon, takes on a human form and roams among us, as if she were a mortal. She is pale in complexion and has long, light golden hair. She is always marked with the symbol of the moon.

    The Guidelines:
    • Must be human
    • Must be female
    • Dressed in modern clothing.
    • Has the symbol of the moon somewhere.
    • Backgrounds are acceptable.

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up). No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please and no multiple submissions.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll.
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work.
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread.
    • Design your character for the brief, not for your personal fetish.
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes. (UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE WITHIN THE GUIDELINES)
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

I will be, but I am still drafting stuff so I wont be posting anything until after New Years's. As I assume most people (might explain why no one else has posted either since everybody is taking some time off during these days).
I like your refined concept, everything till her torso. Somehow the pants just dont look aesthetically pleasing to me.
Another thing to point out is the color of her hair. The guidelines dont really mention it but in the short description above them the color is stated as "light, golden"...... Then again i dont know if we have to take this literally or if its just there for the sake of the description (?)......

Hey all. Here are some design concepts for Selene herself and three poses of her jamming out on her headphones.

Nice to take part in CHOW again! Here's my initial take on the goddess, kind of a breather clothing my character in modern clothes instead of fantasy type stuff, but also awkward haha every now and then I get an itch to add fantasy stuff. Might still change her though.

For the moon symbol, I'm thinking of a tattoo or accessories or both, or maybe even a pet wolf/dog...? moon moon...? get it? moon...? oh don't mind me haha

    mariofernandes - Nice concept man!

GaryBedell - Nice thumbs! I like the spunky vibe I get from the poses haha

Hey guys! Great stuff! I was feeling lonely over here

@clouddreamer7 Good points! May have to find a way to balance out the image a bit more, do you have an issue with the siluete or do you think detailing out the legs would solve the problem? What ever it is I agree there has to be somesort of refinement there. I was fighting with the hair to because of the values, light skin on light hair is a challenge, was hopping I could get away with a gold highlight, maybe @Havok can give a tip on this?

@flamjr, thank you and great to catch you here again! awesome stuff as always! The dog/wolf is quite cool would leave it there so he can howl at the moon The shirt on Selene looks a bit of, the folds and opening don't feel correct (maybe you can find some reference to help you out)

@GaryBedell, like the gestural thumbs, curious to see where it leads

Are other people allowed in the picture if they're blurred out and/or don't have any discernable features?

@mariofernandes - One thing that is bothering me a bit is the head. It feels a little long/slanted to me. Overall, looking cool!
@flammjr - Really diggin' that wolf! The open part of the shirt does look a bit weird to me but maybe it's just the construction lines
@GaryBedell - Those thumbs give off a really fun energy!

This challenge sounded pretty fun so I thought I would give it a shot.

Here's what I'm thinking so far, and then a rough idea of where might I want to head with it.

Still have a lot to work out (like legs, folds....and everything else )

Here are some rough thumbnails to test proportions and style.

GaryBedell: I like the energy in her poses.

Fllamjr: I like the messiness of her hair. It looks natural. To me it looks like her shirt needs a little more structure to it. Part of that feeling could be because of the constructions lines underneath. Very cute dog.

Mariofernandes: I like the way you set up the lighting so that she isn’t lost in the dark background. Her chin may be jutting out a little too much based on the angle of her head.

AK_Guerrero: I’m having trouble seeing your image.

like the topic again. nice work from everyone so far. one of the most interesting parts of the challenges is to see where people start and how it progresses.

@mariofernandes - i like the lighting work as well as the attitude of the pose - definitely reads modern teen / young adult

@spectraspindle - i like numbers 3 (boots or leggings read modern) and 7 (especially hair - nice)

@ AK_Guerrero - i like the effects of lit eyes and symbols on sweatshirt. might think about a couple more curves to read female but nice so far.

@fllamjr - really like the softness of the moon you've captured in her character. dig the wolf too

@garybedell - really like the music jam - nice energy

here's mine (i wanted to try a more curvy model than what I usually see for goddess characters):

Hi Everyone, Happy New Year! This is way out of my comfort zone (which is good) Did some sketches on paper and came up with some basic ideas in Photoshop. I'm not quite sure how I want to pursue this character so any observations/ crits are very welcome! Cheers

Here is a rough sketch. I did a little more research to add to my idea. I included the scooter in reference to Selene pulling the moon across the sky.

AK_Guerrero: The glowing symbols on her hoody and glowing eyes make her seem magical. The clothing is modern except for the headband.

Dragynsart: The movement in her pose is good. She looks confident. The clasp on her jacket seems like it might be uncomfortable.

MannionJJ: The moon shaped hair is interesting. Her clothes could use more modern details.

UUUinfinity: I like her attitude. You could give her little half moon glasses if you wanted to include glasses.

@dragynsart: thank you, and I'm liking you're approach of the goddess body type it's a great direction to go! You can probably push a bit on the modern look though - maybe including zippers or mdern type acessories can help give it more of a contemporary look

    @uuuifinity: very efficient! great style

@spectralspindle: curious to see where it goes, same as dragynsart regarding pushing the modernization, although the motorcycle and helmet may help out

@BenReichert: Glad you like it! awesome

@mariofernandes: Thank you! I like your progress and the way you did her hair and tattoos!

@spectralspindle: Thank you and for the suggestion! I've decided not to but that is a great idea! Great progress, fashion explorations and the inclusion of the scooter!

@dragynsart: Looking promising; keen to see how it goes!

Been forever since I participated in a CHoW, thought I'd give it a go.

CHOW #369 :: Modern Selene, Goddess of the moon

My initial approach was to find a job that she could be doing that would warrent her to be able to observe humans. I thought photographer at first and you can see my initial sketches follow this train of thought. Later I thought about a woman sitting on a bench reading a book in the park (second to last sketch), and then the last one I had her on a roof top for some reason.

CHOW #369 :: Modern Selene, Goddess of the moon

I ended up feeling like Selene should be a little more mature and feel more like a beautiful woman than a cute girl. I looked at online clothing stores for women, to find something that felt modern, but still had hints of that flowing dress/skirt feel and settled on this long coat with all the folds.

Where I stopped at this morning. Still plenty of work to do on her face, but it's starting to actually take shape, so that's nice.

Hey people, here's mine. Critique welcome.

Fllamjr: The wolf's front feet don't seem to be on the same plane as its back ones, and doesn't match how your character's feet touch the ground either. (Also is that "modern clothing?" Looks like she is falling out of some negligee to me!)

Dayle: Again, I'm not sure if "modern clothing" means the same as everyday street clothes, but I don't know anyone who dresses like that... Is there more to add costume wise?
