Some (relatively) new stuff (BIG DL) Updated 09/09/04

Hey everyone its been a long time since I posted anything, so its about time. Heres some of what I've been doing at Blur over the past two years here. Since I'm lazy, I won't post it all at once, heh heh. This stuff here is from some in-house development on some short films for oscar submissions, including "Rockfish"and "Junk Monkeys" (Which is still in the development stage). you probably already saw chukw's huge image dump a few months back. If not it's here

Chuk did all the cool teh stuff and I handled the character and creatures."Rockfish"

    so here goes...

here are some sketches for "Argent" the dog-monkey thing in "Rockfish"

ugh, thats enough for now, I'll post some more tomorrow. Thanks for looking and, as always, C&C is welcome. And thanks to JoshuatheJames for hosting these images.

I like your character designs here. My favorite one is the first one, the guy on the hover bike type vehicle. And I really like the last sketch on the toned paper. I cant wait to see the rest of the images.

    Cool

Wonderful pieces I espeically like the industrial design and color scheme of the first vehicle and rider. Creatures are great! That was an amazing trailer too.

I really like the design and detail in all of these, but what I really love is the colouring on the top two ones. How did you get it all "dirty" metal, and mat/lustreless looking like that? It looks great with all the colours, highlights and shine and really gives those two a cyber-punkish feel over them. Great stuff!

I love the last one. He's really strutting like he thinks he's hot shit. The female monkey thing seems to be doing her best to balance that big ole head. Her center is thrown way out.

Pretty cool stuff, dude. Rockfish was great, so I'm sure Junk Monkeys will be as well.
Nice to see various media used for the images, too. One thing I notice is that almost all your designs are facing the left. Apparently right-handed people have a tendency to do that a lot, but I find it's good for you to be conscious of it and make yourself draw them facing the other way. Helps with symmetry and skewing and such.

    Once again, nice stuff Sean.

Hey, I've been waiting a long time to see some of your work. These are cool! I like the muted colors, and the designs are fun. Needless to say I saved them all. You never know when an event like this will happen again!

Hey thanks for the comments and feedback everyone!

Mike-Thanks! hey, I love your work and I wish I could have talked to you in Austin, maybe next year heh heh. You know you can see the whole short (albeit low res) at blur's site now. theres a link to it in my post up there...

Matt- Yeah the guy on the bike was actually being modelled by the very talented Jerome Denjean who is a supervising modeler here at Blur. I'm not sure whether it was finished, but it was looking very cool. I'll see if I can post some renders...I love doing toned drawings because they allow you to push and pull the forms from a mid-level in space (if that makes sense) as opposed to the purely subtractive process of drawing on white. Thanks for the comments!

Jet-Whats up, dude? How's post-Austin life treating you? heh heh, yeah once I get my site up and running (some time in this decade) I should be able to post more frequently. As it is, I have to rely on the charity of friends like a hapless bum, not unlike my life in general, heh heh...

Nard- And they want to lick you back...

Theo-Thanks, yeah I'm gonna post more right now....

chukw-thanks Chuk, that smiley kind of looks like you with that rastafarian hat you always wear to work despite the fact that you aren't Jamaican...

Ulysses-Thank you very much! The guys here at Blur pulled out all the stops on Rockfish, and it shows. I feel truly honored to be working with men and women of such a high caliber.

Mirre-Thanks, the process for the first two there was, I took the line drawing into PS then slopped in a grayish-brown base tone under teh lines and then painted on top in another layer. The brush I was using was a hard-edged brush at 45% with size variation on the pen pressure. That allowed for sort of a mottled type texture. and by constantly hitting alt(color-picker) I was able to get some color variation. the underlying tone ties everything together and fills in any blank spaces.

Egerie-Thanks, though he's gonna look different in the movie (if there ends up being one). Despite my efforts to the contrary, people still make Jar-Jar comparisons, which hurts my soul. I KNEW I should have made him blue!...grumble grumble...

pvrhye-Yeah, the pose may have worked, if I had drawn more of a "looking down" view on the feet and moved the left leg (our right) forward a bit. THe crackling you hear is the sound of the tendons in her knees and hips ripping... She too was at one point being modelled by one of our 3D masters, this time Heikki Anttila .

Brass-Dude! you're totally right about the whole drawing to the left thing!!! I went and looked at a bunch of my past art and almost all is facing left, I feel so ashamed. I'll try to draw a few facing right, or else I'll just flip em in photoshop. muhahahahaha!

nero's master- hey thanks, more is on the way. BTW did you ever find out what you needed to know about Calarts?

    liquidwerx- Thanks!

Josh- NOOOOOOOOOO!! Not bowing smileys!! you bastard! I'd give a sliver of my skews for your fourth arm, actually, hahah. thanks Josh.

Sedone- hey thank you very much, Sedone. Nice job on the Rift wars cards, by the way. Beautiful work. might we see what you've been up to lately or is it all under NDA?

Thanks again, and here comes round 2....

    -Sean

ok here's more rockfish stuff, this time some sketchwork for the fish itself. These actually don't really look anything like the final creature (I can't find the final sketch) with the exception of the face study. I had this idea for a double-hinged mouth that was ultimately unused on account of it would have apparently been a rigging nightmare. THeres also a toned-drawign of Sirus, the main guy. We were going for a stylized approach, thus the monkey-man proportions. Luckily, when I handed the concept off to Irfan Celik for modeling, he made it look cool.

And theres some other stuff too from different blur projects...

    A junk monkey vehicle...

    A couple ship-type things...

    Misc. unused concept stuff...

a couple concepts from Blur's trailer for Everquest II...

Thats it for now. I'll see if I can rustle up some more stuff...

    Thanks for looking!

    -Sean

Wow, what a suprise. This thread came out of nowhere. It's about time Sean, great works. My favorite is the creature with the big ears in the second to last post from your first batch of images, and the first pic of the creature on the hover cycle. Great variety of works, man.

you guys at blur make the everquest stuff actually look good; the trailer was very cool and well done.... it's too bad everyone who buys it based on that will be disappointed that the art style isn't at the trailer's level of quality or goodness

thanks for posting, awesome work man.

Man, those pictures look so great. I got a question, that will sound noobish and stupid but... Ive been on the forum for a while and im curious as to what the brown paper is and what you use to color on it. Ive seen alot of people using it and it looks great for rendering and I really want to try it. Thanks in advance.

Yay, more! Yup, finding out exactly what I need to know 'bout good ol' CalArts, even after you "ahem" little comment No, no moving to Korea or Japan or whatever for me. If I end up in California, I'll drop you a line and be like "hey, remember me? I'm that funny tall girl you met at the Austin workshop. can I crash here for, like, I dunno... four years. Just kidding. 'Nee ways, keep new stuff comming. What are you working on at Blur right now? More movies I hope.
