how does the "star" rating feature work?

how does a thread gain a star rating? (i.e. 4 stars, 5 stars). How many people need to rate a thread, before the thread sees stars? Is it an average? Anyone who knows vBulletin and can explain?

I don't know either. However, I'd like to start a discussion whether it's a good idea to have this ranking:

    Excellent
    Good
    Average
    Bad
    Terrible

I mean, why has a one star thread to be terrible? Why not start with "average" for one star, and then get up to showing potential, good, excellent and outstanding?

A thread needs five votes (at the moment - it is possible to change) before the (average) rating is displayed...

I'd of course ( because I am always against how things work here ) disable the feature.
As if professionals didn't get enough encouragement in replies ...
the only thing stars do is making people who get 3 stars for their sketchbooks feel bad.

And I guess people sometimes decide to vote instead of writing a comment because it is more convenient!?

I think it would be great ...
if it was possible to change the vote when a member improves (votes for sketchbooks).
Or if a thread is updated with a better version of the image ("It's Finally Finished" threads).

no it doesn't...people with 3 stars usually have outstanding work inside their thread. The star feature, I think is very useful if you're browsing and interested in seeing the more popular threads, it attracts more attention to the best work on the site (generally speaking).

Well, I don't feel bad for having 3 stars as such, but having started higher to get downgraded is sort of de-motivating. That's one of the reasons for suggesting to change the meaning of the stars. 0 stars - no one has bothered yet to vote. From one star onwards it's worth taking notice of this thread because something interesting seems to be going on there. Really bad threads (or posts) get few looks and generally no replies....
