Button design for the CA Forum, please look.

    Hello guys.

We are now trying to come up with some new designs of buttons for the forum, feel free to add some of your own button designs in here if you have any and or want to participate.
Otherwise feel free to comment and critique the ones we will post in here.

    thank you for your help.

Here's some of mine that I have been messing around with, I admit I am not that good with buttons and it is really hard to decide if one should go with less design or add a lot in the buttons.

Let me know if you like any of them and which ones I should direct to the recycle bin.

And some of them in action, from left I prefer the first one and that 4th one, maybe they are all bad.

    have a nice day

when i look at it now, the text seems a bit too 'fuzzy', anyway to just sharpen in a tad?

i´d vote for something with a serif font and no beveling whatsoever.

don´t get me wrong i myself am a hardcore photoshop fancyness nerd but the site as it is sports a simple kinda retro look.

so kill the jaggies where possible but don´t introduce different visual styles.

Maybe a funny question to ask, but where did you guys get the little images at. You know, like the paper and pencil before "new thread" ? Just wondering so that I could play with a higher res version.

davi, maybe it is the font that I am using. what font is default in the forum?
I tried with sharpen but that won't be that good when saving to gif.

Nero's Master, right click the post reply button and save picture as, otherwise use mine here cause it is the same size.

    here's the post reply button

I prefer this one : Button design for the CA Forum, please look.
But I have to admit I'm not too keen on the ready-made Photoshop effect.. Perhaps something more pixel clean would be more appropriate (plus it'd fit with Prom's clean emoticon style.) and more pro looking.

If you really absolutely want to stick with the effect, please please please change the highlight and shadow color to something else than the default colours...

Here is an idea I'm working with right now. Not that great, but oh well. That's what brainstorming is for.

And, I don't want to sound like a prick or anything, but the placement of the buttons on the forums now is really bad. Graphically, they just clash where they are. Maybe you already know this and I'm just being redundant. Dunno. Anyways, here are some screen graps I took. I really love the design of the button, but keep all of the buttons on the same side. It's an eye flow thing.

thanks guys for all your nice comments about the buttons.

Nero's Master, I can see what u mean. Try to go with less strong features in your buttons and we will see what it looks like. Like fade shadow and less strong highlight.

How many buttons are there? I know the edit and Quote button aswell. Are there anymore that will be changed?

ok I will see if I can post the edit and quote button later, in about 2-3 hours.
    thanks again guys

Sorry about the not posting yesterday, it seems the connection server decided to call it a day.
Anyway, I did some test for the edit and quote button yesterday. Let me know if they work or if I should resize the font and or change them in some way.

    thanks in advance.

I like what you did for anti-aliasing on the buttons i did, they were admittedly a little crappy ;-) but: they had the advantage of being really tiny for bandwidth ;-) i see yours are too tho maybe even smaller.

The font on all buttons should be the same, the font on the edit and quote is now scaled non-uniform, a big nono in typography land... Also maybe less bold or , when not selected, make the text lighter than black. It makes the buttons less distracting and easier to read.

The edit buttons also have a different gradient than the post reply button, maybe it's easier to have em all the same (by making sure you use the same process on all of them, an easy way is to make a photoshop action for that) it is an important detail if you want to make perfect web buttons.

Also, Jason selected a Serif font (Georgia) originally. I know that serif is more difficult to read sometimes on screen but could you try the buttons with the Gerorgia on them just for a tryout? I'd like to see how they look.

Nero: srry, there is no hi-res version, i pixeled all the icons by hand in one evening, hence the 'aliased' and b/w look ;-) there are a LOT of items

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: This is my 1000th post! wow... what an occasion...

'Tis cool. I'll keep working and trying to tone down my versions. I like what going on so far. Still need ot move that button that's on the left side of the screen to the right side though.

Erik, many thanks for the tips there. the gradient was made smaller on purpose since the buttons are smaller, let me know if u think it works better or for worse in these re-makes below.

Ok here's the re-make, let me know if they work or don't and what changes I should do.
