Sculpture - Clayface..."You wanna piece of me?!"

I've been sculpting original portrait busts and creature riders for quite while, but I wanted to give a go at a comic book sculpt...(practice for toy sculpts one day perhaps) so here's CLAYFACE. (Batman The Animated Series)

He's my favorite villain from that show, and just had to give him a go. It still has a way to go, but it's coming along. I built the armature and got to the point where it is now in about 5-6 hours...so it's coming along pretty quick.

I'll post updates as I get closer to being done, but here's some of the in progress photos up to where I am now with it....

Where I am currently....getting "goopier" as it progresses.

This is looking great Scotty. I'm digging the goopiness and I say you keep on adding it. What is that stone going to end up as? I remember him turning his hand into a stone in the cartoons....so could that be it? I also liked it when he turnd his hand into a hammer. Keep us updated Scotty!

Thanks all! I use 2 guages of copper wire for the armature, and the "stone block" hand will be detailed to look more like one when I get to it. The part that takes the longest is where I am now...the detailing and cleaning.

Because of the long weekend, and having other things going on...I haven't been able to devote as much time to this lately as I want to. However, here is a bit of an update showing the other side's goopiness. I will smooth it out, and do something with that other hand soon too.

Here's the updated pics....ignore the "splats" on the ground they are what I was thinking of using under the front arm, but I may take it in another direction...we will see. (I'm not rushing it...I want to get it right)

    Man, this piece is great!

The only crit is, on the small pile on the floor, it looks too perfectly formed (like a starfish or something). I'd make it a bit more awkwardly shaped. Also, when Matt Hagen turned into Clayface, the clay seemed alive on him at all times and never gave the impression it would be flat. I might make it a bit more mountainous and shaped as though it was trying to reconnect to the body after he slung it at someone (or whatever). Just a thought.

Looks awesome though! Do you have any other projects in the works you could share?

Thanks Rambhat! I finally found some time to continue with this sculpt after being away from it, and it's getting closer to being done. (Still have more detailing and refining to do before I harden it, but...it's happening)

Another project I'm working on is a bust of Marrow from X-men since she's really never had much attention before, and I'd like to give 'er a go. I have a surprise in store with that one though, and have to wait for some aspects to be prepared before I can begin.

Very nicely done! Clayface is one of my favorites as well. =)

My penis really isn't big. I was just using forced perspective.

    Thanks Lactose!

I finally found the time to finish him. (well the brick-hand needs a bit more work...still wonky...but I'll fix that)

Anyhow, here he is...in all his goopy glory.....

Thanks Demon! I made it for myself really just to see if I could, and I'm pleased that others like it as well. I'm currently working on something new...and I'll post up pics soon.

Although not one of my favorite Batman TAS villains, you've done him more than justice. I always love to see the progression of your work; you ought to set up a stationary camera, take pics every few hours, then make an animation of 'em.

Thanks girl! That net-cam idea would be great actually. Hmmmmmmm......maybe I can do that! We will see. Anyhow, I never really liked the stone block hand...so I went ahead and did a bit of an alteration...(I think it's more menacing)...thanks again Steph!
