September! First month of Spring here...best time of year, although summer isn't too bad either, except for the scorching heat.

    Anyway, nice work so far-
Matt- looks good, even unfinished...if you were to finish it I'd suggest adding another colour somewhere to help it leap out a bit more.

Rusty- Nice style. How'd you do the background?

Well that's it for my insight crits so far...

    been a long time eh?
anyway.. i've got some crappy fooling around today - so unhappy with it i tried to cover the mess up only to make it worse. Well... that's my fate i guess

    comments:
Matt - thx for starting the thread. you had a nice start there - pitty you didn't finish.
Rusty - you bastard - great one again. love the colors and all.
Darkside - welcome to the sick side
Try to focus more on the form. Try to make it seem 3D. measure! look.look.look. Pay more attention to the shapes. Forget color for now, and forget values - for start try to make it look like you and try to make it look 3D )like a low-poly model if you want)

Wow, Oblio . . . that yellow and purple one is amazing. The forms are so well defined and the brush strokes are beautiful.
I haven't seen you post something like this before--you must be holding out on us! I want to see what else you can do.

Darkside the new one is much better form-wize exept the nose is facing forward when the rest of the face is at an angle. And with your old one it seems like theres nothing past your cheeks, try adding the other ear and a neck. Both would help add depth. And I agree with the others when they say forget the colour for now. Work with form, then values, then colour. I'm going to try something with colour tomorrow for the first time since my first sp(which was not such a great idea looking back on it).
When drawing/painting these, compair where one piece of your face is compaired to another. Look at one of the curves of your face. Compair where that curve is to the nearest object, like an eye, draw the eye in compaired to the curve. Then repeat the process. putting each peace in compaired to another pieces position. The same goes with the values, which are much easier to put in once you've positioned the rest of your face.

    Most importantly, practice, practice practice.

been away from this for too long, but sometimes that lets you persivere longer..

    September Self Portraits

I should work more on this but it ran away from me, the face turned by its self and the colours well, lets not mention then :-p

Darkside- good progress, for the nose, one thing i find helpful is to ignore the nostrils untill you have the form, and for every part of the face, look at the way other people solve the problems.

oblio- i acnt see yours again, all i see are fortune city placeholders...

rusty- very nice, it looks really iconic. how did you do it? ink wash and markers?

matt smith- you're getting better and clearly having fun doing it, i preferred last months ones personally, but the only complaint i could make is that you dont sharpen these up enough, which gives them an out of focus fuzzyness, maybe try using a hard brush?

keep up the good work folks

It's been a while since I could work on anything other than my site (ColdFusion to Flash errors left and right)... new son and all.

My first attempt at using watercolors in Painter, or any form that is. About 30 minutes early in the day, gone for 8 hours, came back and worked 1.5 hours on it in different light. So excuse the messiness.

    Eey

Hey everyone. Been about three months since I last posted, kinda fell out of the CA groove for a while.
Anyway, a quick SP in photoshop, about 20 minutes, I think. Really simple line drawing, then I built up black/white on different opacities. I'll probably end up revisiting it, but crits are very much appreciated.

    September Self Portraits

Matt Smith - Freaking sweet, I learn so much about lighting from your work
Rusty - The backround texture thing is cool- PS brushes?
Darkside - Awesome improvement from 1st
Ni* = Edward Norton. Have they ever been photographed together?
Benzo - Very cool, the only crit I have is that I think the bridge of the nose spreads and seperates too much near the top.
Shadoman - How'd you do the hair? It looks great

Taoists ain't got nothin' on me.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I really appreciate it. Ni, as for my pieces being fuzzy, there are several reasons why that happens, first is I try to do them in an hour-hour and a half, and after that I am too lazy to sharpen up the edges, which I probably should. Also I have been expirementing with other brushes. But this one I did today, I worked alot longer on it, so tell me if you think its fuzzy still or not. Also Ni, this last one looks like painter, I am curious what brush you used for it if it was done in painter.

I may redo this piece later, I think it doesnt look enough like me, its kinda funny looking though. The cheeks are too wide and the mouth isnt wide enough.

    September Self Portraits

-Rusty- I really like the style you did your piece in, its really nice.

-Darkside- Just keep practicing working with form and dont get too caught up on details until later in the piece, you will get it in time.

-Oblio- Both pieces are really great, I really enjoy the first one. I really like the shape of the lips.

-Ni- Great piece as usual. I always like the suddle strokes you get. Always great form and shape. I do wish though you would do a completed one.

-Benzo- I like the underneath sketch. Its interesting to look at. Though the end portrait is too flat.

-Shadoman- I like the colors, and I like how some of the colors start to form shape, especially on the forehead.

-Arbiter051- I am glad my work helps you out. Keep working at it. If you have a digital camera, just go in a dark room and take a lamp with you and light one side of your face and shoot.

Hey everyone... hope you don't mind if I come aboard for a bit.

Matt Smith: Just a small hint of an eyelid and something inside the ear would really help your first piece on this page (if you were to finish it). Cool lighting and angle on that last one.

Darkside: Skintones... Search your face for the places that are more flush with blood and then the other spots where the tones are bluer or greener where there is less blood flowing around. Thats a good place to start.

Oblio: I love the lighting on yours... you look pretty tough.

Ni* :I like how youve done a lot with what seems like one big brush. nice.

    Love that Line drawing Benzo

Shadoman: Looks like yours could use some more darks in the face... seeing that the eyes are close to black.

Arbiter051: Looks like youve got some nice form going on, though the jaw line seems to go back too far. Goes past where your hair is hanging. A few more details in the eyes would help the piece stand out also.

Hey Wizard of KOZ. I'll have to remember that face the next time I'm walking around Chapel Hill.

timmyhol: I like the varying skin tones. Maybe emphasizing a shadow area on one side of the face would help the face feel a little less flat.

I0N: Nice left-handed one. They are always fun.

Darkside: I hate setting up lighting. Such a pain in arse. Your shadows are looking fine to me. The eyes could use some even weight.

    Rash Overdrive: Nice one man.

Heres one done in photoshop. I dont use the program as much ever since I got painter, so I practiced with it. I am surprise that I was able to render it this well, even though there are still things that need to be worked out in it. I am happy with the way it looks though.
