    CHOW #365 :: Barbarian Lord

    CHOW #365 :: Barbarian Lord

    Character of the Week #365
    Barbarian Lord

    Deadline - Sunday, November 16th 10PM GMT

    The Barbarians are a strong, ruthless society. Though they prefer to live as a primitive society, they are certainly one to be reckoned with. They don't do politics, so the leader is chosen, not by bloodlines, but through combat. The strongest of a barbarian tribe is chosen as the leader and any barbarian may challenge the leader to take over. However, there is no mercy, only an honorable death to the loser. The lord of a tribe wears a head dress of a large prey they killed on a hunt. It is a magnificent trophy they earned and usually have the scars as secondary proof.
    The Guidelines:
    • Must be Barbarian (Basically a jacked up human)
    • Can be male or female.
    • Must have the trophy head dress.
    • No background this time around, Please refer to the rules below.

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up). No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please and no multiple submissions.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll.
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work.
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread.
    • Design your character for the brief, not for your personal fetish.
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes,gradients or silhouettes. (UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE WITHIN THE WEEKLY BRIEF.)
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

    In... Lord Draco Malfoy, to escape the confinement of Azkaban for crimes in his 30's, fled into the dark forest to live out his years with the centaurs, as a barbarian ruler. Taking the head of Buckbeak, a hippogriff that left him scarred, he wears the creatures remains as a gruesome crown.

    Ok getting in at the beginning on this one. I'm going with a Barbarian that hunts exotic cats like tigers and cheetahs and stuff.. I think it will be a great opportunity to play with patterns for his garb. I had an idea for a claw weapon gauntlet that he wears on his hand made from tiger claws and a great tiger is the beast he slew. I think it will pretty wicked with the skin draping over him and making a sort of cape. Heres some of the wips I've come up with while sketching at work.

    I am going for a female barbarian, from a savage matriarchal society. Her trophy is the head of a monster cobra, and she escaped this battle barely with her life; the venom from the cobras bite causing gradual tissue death, and infection. The ability to tolerate high levels of pain and suffering made her into what she has become. These sketches are very rough, but i know where i am going with this. She would be from a hot swamp environment so that will be a continual theme - the swamps waters also making her infection worse. She would be teetering on the edge of insanity, and in my final work i would like to somehow convey that.
    They are photos of the sketches, as the scanner is currently not an option

    Cave - CHOW #365 :: Barbarian Lord

    Started throwing some colour in having tidied up the pose etc, finding the no background rule a bit hard to deal with but rules are rules.

    Thank you WildCardRat! It's very uplifting to hear your comment...The piece is progressing, I opted for a quadruped design. I'm having some troubles rendering, which has always been my week spot...

    no problem! been wrestling with my sketches all day, but i think i have completed initial design, so tomorrow begins the process of redrawing and colour mapping. The quadruped idea just makes it stand out more! My issues have always been with function and proportion, so focused on that, lots of references. It will be interesting to see how it stands up as a watercolour with all the digital work

    @Cave: Because you need to reach at least 10 posts before the moderation on your account is dropped. This is a way to prevent spammers from posting junk all over.

    @Doidobala: There is no where in the rules that restricts you from the type of pose to use. Please read the rules to familiarize yourself with how this works.

    Hey Wild! I can't wait to see your stuff, the watercolor idea was already hitching into my mind in the sense that i would like to keep a strong lineart against a washed out colouring...

    Here is some color pass...loving c&c !

    Havent figured out whats going on his head. i toyed around with a lion and a polar bear for a while, but they all kept distracting from his face. I found myself locking eyes with his headdress, not with him.
